Fishing tales down south

in OCD4 years ago (edited)

Kinda exciting imagining the HIVE of activity going on all over the world as we kick butt blogging on this brand new Blockchain called HIVE!
One really positive way to keep sane in a world in Covid19 Lockdown!

Who will I bump into? Old friends and new friends I imagine, as our witnesses decided to HIVE off from the old Steem Blockchain after World War Tron broke out and opened the doors to most of the Steem people!

I shared my experience of Lockdown on my Steem blog last night and things looked ok with my son's return from Russia at the beginning of May, but now it's been announced that no international flights can land in SA till end of May so it's a huge concern for Mother Hen!

Back to escaping everyday life - we visited the stunning and tranquil Overberg region in the Western Cape, South Africa last week, and I'd like to take you on a trip to a quaint little fishing village called Struisbaai.

We are all seafood lovers, so staying in a typical fisherman's house and village was pure heaven with the added bonus of being able to buy fish directly from the fishing boats; literally straight from the sea to the pan! We had really good weather except for the last day, but that's when they seemed to catch more fish!

I think everyone who knows me will guess who had to do the prepping and cooking!

This was a Silver Fish prepared by one of the local fish & chips takeways - I chose a salad!

A famous local is Parrie, a large Stingray, who has a friendly relationship with visitors to this little harbour; we saw him every time we went down there. He gets fed by holiday makers as well as the fishermen and is very tame. Other stingrays also swim around in the harbour, but Parrie is the largest of them all and even has his own Facebook page ;) Parrie is a short-tail stingray known as Dasyatis brevicaudata ; they can be trained to be hand-fed, explaining his behaviour!

On our first walk to the beach in front of the village we saw a rare spectacle. Unfortunately our cellphone photos are not that clear, but this was a seal that was swimming very close to the shore, hunting for sandfish, and he triumphed! The seagulls tried stealing the fish from him, but were unsuccessful!
This was at dusk so also made it not so clear.

Let's see who else is in the HIVE tonight; I for one am really excited about our new Hive and truly thankful for all the hard work that went into it!

Here in the HIVE @lizelle. Nothing like having fresh from the boat fish and seafood. Hope your son makes it back healthy and safe at some point.

Thank you so very much, this is awesome!

Looks lovely - we're hopefully flying to the Cape next week.
Hope your son gets back to you soon. My mom @pandamama also stressing about flights back to Cyprus

Thanks @edenmichelle, apparently domestic flights are not affected, my aunt also flies back to Cape Town this coming week; she stayed here to look after my mom while we were in the Cape:)
Hope you get a flight back to Cyprus, it's a real concern!

Fortunately its not urgent as my intention was to stay for 2 - 3 months as I have a lot of work to do here in South Africa and as soon as the borders are open in Cyprus I will book my flight. Hope you son gets back to you asap
