A Rusty Beauty Of Jelenec (Czechia/Slovakia)

in OCD4 years ago (edited)

During my hike in the White Carpathians (Bílé Karpaty) last week, I came across a stunning construction - nearly 50m tall steel tower used by the army, dated back to 1950s. The tower is part of an abandoned military compound, there are more military buildings if interested. It is situated on the mountain Jelenec (925m a.s.l.). Borderline goes through that area. It is kind of funny, as the estate is owned by Czechia, while the tower and the other buildings belong to Slovakia. Perhaps that is the reason why the entire compound falls into ruin which is a pity. You will not find such extraordinary views of the White Carpathians anywhere else! Lets check it out already ;-)

Wow! A spectacular tower sticking out of the woods.

To get there, you take the path alongside the border between Czechia and Slovakia in the primeval forest. The forest itself (maples, beeches, ashes) is just adorable in the summer!

Hidden in the woods, there it is. Rusted tower with hexagonal ground plan. Free admission, though enter at your own risk :-D

Getting closer to check the condition of the tower before climbing up. Okay, it does not look very encouraging :-D

Climbing up the main ladder. I must admit it puts quite significant strain on my untrained arms. This is view from the lower part of the tower.

Secondary ladder (which might be meant for wiring and such stuff rather than climbing up?) from the lower part of the tower. Shall I take it?

Secondary ladder. The tower has got several floors where you can rest and enjoy superb views.

Look through the opening at the roof, the main ladder, almost there!

When you look downwards along the regular ladder. It could make one's head spin.

The secondary ladder and look downwards, even worse than with the main ladder :-D

At last! The highest platform beneath the roof. After I got there, I must admit I was sort of cautious and kept distance from the edge for some time :-D

A couple of minutes later, after I overcame my little fear of heights, I was able to pull round and enjoy the magnificent views all around!

In the middle, the highest peak of the White Carpathians, Velká Javořina (970m). You could see there a transmission tower, ski slopes and the Holubyho cabin.

I couldn't get enough of superb views!

After I savoured all those beautiful panoramas, I climbed down in one piece, otherwise, there would not be this post, right? :-D

All in all, an intense adrenaline rush. I say: Wow! I truly enjoyed it, must get back to enjoy it again. I will post about the actual hike in the White Carpathians some day. If you like this post, don't forget to follow my blog as more good stuff to come.

See you on the trail ;-)

Cool post and views. I would not have climbed it as is it to rusty for my taste!

It's true it's rusted here and there, on the other hand I heard somewhere they do some kind of expection from time to time, otherwise they would ban it 😂

Parádní rozhled. Kolik to má příček? Vylézt to nahoru dalo asi pěkně zabrat :-)
