The New Normal?

in OCD4 years ago

We have been documenting how people have been adopting to a new normal.

Fortunately where I am living the situation has been getting better every week and people have been allowed to get back together again: shops have long opened, people can go to parks and hang out, and even fitness centers as well as swimming pools are open again. However, the social distancing rule of 1,5m is still officially required. Yet people are not always sticking to this rule. In fact, it is rather evident that people have grown somewhat tired of social distancing rules:

We can see groups of people very close to one another and also on markets or other public places these distances are not followed very closely.

The last months have been tough on everyone (yet more so on some than others, e.g., low income groups, minority groups or self-employed people have had a much more difficult time) and there are obvious marks of what the corona pandemic has done to the city and it's citizens. Some shops had to close...

...while others are trying to keep afloat by offering large discounts...

And of course there are the constant reminders of social distancing...

...but already they are fading... and people and even police are not taking the rules always so seriously. For the mask this often means to wear it only on the mouth as this still enables to breathe normally through the nose:

There are also a lot of very paradoxical settings: for example here people on the left side are not required to wear a mask, but on the right side they have to as this place belongs to the market where masks are mandatory. I wonder if the virus adheres to these virtual boundaries...

If people are tired of social distancing now, they might have to endure more social distancing - like in Melbourne, Hong Kong, US, Japan... All these places are seeing a resurgence. It only takes one person to be careless, and all the previous hardship and endurance, money and measures will be gone to waste. Better put up with a little more discomfort now and get it all over with. :-)

yeah that would be great in principle, but humans generally don't behave like that in my experience. This is especially so in "western" countries where restrictions to individual freedoms are seen more sceptical.

The problem is also aggrevated by conflicting policy changes: it was generally advised not to wear a mask by the WHO and CDC as they were seen as ineffective. And now people should wear them. The science is also still unclear about masks. Unfortunatley we don't have the time to "settle the science" so putting up with more discomfort might be the better alternative...

You are absolutely right. Humans know what they should do, and yet, they refuse to do it.

People want freedom, but the freedom which they want do not exist. And even if they were granted their 'freedom', what good is that freedom to them when they are fighting for their last breath, or worse, six feet underground. All very silly.

I believe the initial 'no need to wear a mask' was because there was a shortage of mask. So, to prevent people from stocking them and causing a panic, and to keep the masks for the front line workers, they say that if you are healthy, you do not need a mask. But if you are sick, then you should wear a mask to avoid spreading the virus.

Now that there are enough masks to go around, it makes sense to wear one when you are out in public.
