Online Advertising as a Form of Marketing (The Introduction)

in Project HOPE4 years ago

Hello everyone,

In my previous post I talked about email marketing and I am glad you all liked it, I want to say a big thank you to everyone that keeps reading my post and to the @project.hope community for being supportive. Without no further delay and still on marketing and advertising, I will be looking at something virtually everyone is used to which is online advertisement.

You must have seen several pop ups from different companies and businesses trying to create an awareness about what they do while you are surfing the internet. In short and simple terms, Online advertisement is showcasing, making awareness and publicity of products, companies and businesses to the general public or their audience in other to cause an increase in sales. The major purpose of an advertisement either online or offline is to create awareness and to get positive response from their audience.

In advertising, the advertisers start to thin like the audience so as to create a catchy concept aimed at stimulating a consumer’s need and satisfy their taste. I remember some months ago I wanted to get a phone but didn’t have a specification or brand to choose but while surfing the internet, I saw an advert by Samsung, and this advertisement seemed to be reaching out to my need so I decided to get it. When I got to the store, I didn’t notice other phones being showcased instead I went for the Samsung phone because I already watched an online advert where the advertiser thought like me and the advertisement met my needs.

Unlike email marketing where you need to get the emails of your audience, online advertisement is not restricted by time, addresses or geographical location. Online advertising could be as simple as a hyperlinked image on a website, to a video or simple images and sounds.

Immediately after the internet became a thing for everyone, advertisers started using online advertising. Soon with the increase in the number of users on the internet, it became down on advertisers that internet was the future for advertisement. According to Wikipedia, the first online advert was a clickable banner which was sold to a law firm in 1993 showing that online advertising was born some few years back.

One major advantage of online adverts to offline adverts is the ability to drive instant sales with one click. Unlike offline advertising that goes in a certain direction, online adverts come in different displays, methods and sizes. Let me give a short explanation to the types of online adverts

Interstitial Banners

Have you click on a page only to see an advert page between the page you are leaving and the page you are going to, if yes then you have an understanding of what interstitial banners are. Interstitial Banners are advert banners placed between pages so the audience can see the advert before leaving or closing the page.

Pop-Ups Adverts

You are scrolling through a page only to see that some other smaller windows, banners, videos, picture and hyperlinks or products and businesses are showing on the pages you are on. This can be very annoying but has been able to pass messages to the audience. In most cases when the audience tries to close the pops, they turn out to open the adverts. Because of the annoying way pop-ups show up on a page, browsers now have pop-up blockers which might not be good for advertisers as most of them have the right to legally advertise using pop-ups. In other to solve this, a lot of site as users to disable pop-ups blockers before they can access their site.

Map Advertisement

Have you tried using online mapping solutions only to see adverts of places and locations of businesses? You think those maps and addresses showing dominos close to you isn’t an advert on the map, then why isn’t your house address showing in the same manner. Now you get my point.

Floating Advertisement

Unlike pop-ups, this do not create a different window and they do not cover contents and they can be closed by the users. Floating advertisements are created with dynamic hypertext so they can flash and float in a layer above the contents on the site for a few seconds.

Banner Advertisement

This advertisement often have its own space on a webpage. It consists of graphic images and or animations for advertising purposes. With banner advertising, you are one click away from performing a transaction.

Unlike other forms of online adverts, banner advertising vary in sizes and shapes as well as location on the page but it never block the contents since there is always a space prepared for it.

Video Advertisement

This is often conversant with YouTube and other online video platforms. Here, videos of products, services and companies show up for about 5 seconds after which the users can close the ads. This advert often disrupt the video but the users have can close after watching for 5 seconds.

In advertising generally, the advertisers must always make sure the advertisement builds brand awareness, be able to meet consumer demands, drive sales and increase feedbacks and reports

I would have loved to continue but I will have to stop here so the post won’t be too long. So let me know, which online advertisement do you think is best for advertising purposes and which online advert do you dislike as a consumer.

I will appreciate if you share your views in the comment. Thanks for taking time to read my blog

As a consumer I hate most ads. I can tolerate more the silent, non-agressive ones: A simple banner, for example. I hate videos and unwanted sounds over all.

As a consumer, ads are always annoying but they always get the heart and control the conscious subconsciously to buy what is advertised.

I found it interesting that the first post image was about a way to remove the ads on the uTorrent, on the other hand, I certainly believe that the explosion of online advertising was one of the things that triggered the marketing of the web at the end of The 90s of the last century, although today it is very common that users sound extensions to block ads or use browsers that already filter ads from their code, as is my case that I am using the Brave browser.

As an online advertiser, using ads blocker is one hindrance to be faced but unlike email marketing, online advertising is a better way not to spam users.

@pedrobrito2004 what do you think can be done in the online advertising industry so users can stop using ads blockers?

Starting from the fact that I am a user without great knowledge of advertising and marketing, I am going to risk saying that they could work in two directions:

  1. On the one hand, to use non-invasive advertising, it can be like the one already used in marquees at the bottom of websites, such as advertising images inserted in the site, promosional links added to the published content (whenever this is relevant) and Other things in this style. I think that if it is not exceeded and is related to some topic that I as a user I am looking for then it could work.
  2. On the other hand, I don't know if it can be useful to work with platforms like Brave's, on paper it seems possible and beneficial, but I have no experience at that point. In any case, creating a benefit for the advertising visitor can be an incentive for not using blockers, which is already done in some places with indications or appeals to solidarity, in some places they ask me to turn off the shield to support the funding of the site with advertising and that they can continue to provide me with new content, in other places they are a bit more aggressive and I can't directly see it or use it without turning off the shields (I don't like the latter very much, but I have seen it and I understand why they do it )

I reiterate, I am not a specialist, but I think these two ideas can help.

I am sure they can help, thanks for paying detailed attention to my post.

You're Welcome!

hi @ajewa

I generally hate advertising that becomes extremely annoying especially when you're watching a video or reading some interesting text.
Definitely today with Google algorithms, artificial intelligence is an important resource that shows advertising according to the interests of each person, I find that it is a very useful tool, as long as it does not become invasive.
