Ulver is one of the most eclectic and experimental bands that I know and talking about all their work would be too long but if I want to leave a few clear points regarding their sound.
Ulver is a Norwegian band formed in 1993 when black metal bands were in full swing in that country. Ulver at the beginning had a raw and folk sound as we can see in their first album Bergtatt - Et Eeventyr i 5 Capitler, an album with black metal components but still a bit different from the typical sound of these bands.
Ulver es una de las bandas más eclécticas y experimentales que conozco y hablar de toda su obra sería algo demasiado extenso pero si quiero dejar unos cuantos puntos claros en cuanto a su sonido se trata.
Ulver es una banda noruega formada en 1993 cuando había pleno apogeo de bandas black metal en dicho país. Ulver al principio tenía un sonido crudo y folk como podemos apreciar en su primer álbum Bergtatt - Et Eeventyr i 5 Capitler, un disco con componentes black metal pero aun asi distaba un poco del sonido típico de estas bandas.
With his third album Nattens Madrigal - Aatte Hymne til Ulven i Manden, Ulver made a tribute to his own name (wolf in Norwegian) doing a wild, solid work with the best riffs that have been heard in black metal. I remember the first time I heard this work, I was impressed by the super sharp guitars capable of tormenting a vampire, the speed of the drums with a constant blast beat and heartbreaking melodies. This is definitely their most extreme and black metal oriented work and also the last of its kind for the band.
Con su tercer trabajo el Nattens Madrigal - Aatte Hymne til Ulven i Manden, Ulver le hizo un tributo a su propio nombre (lobo en noruego) haciendo un trabajo salvaje, sólido y con de los mejores riffs que se han escuchado en el black metal. Recuerdo la primera vez que escuche este trabajo me impresionaron las guitarras súper agudas capaces de atormentar a un vampiro, la rapidez de la batería con un blast beat constante y unas melodías desgarradoras. Este en definitiva es su trabajo más extremo y orientado al black metal y también el último en su tipo para la banda.
Perdition City was the beginning of a constant evolution and experimentation. The band completely changed its folk and metal sound to give rise to an electronic, ambient and enveloping sound, not leaving aside the dark and melancholic atmosphere that the band has always given us. On this album we can hear a futuristic sound but with touches of jazz as if it were a noir film. This is a very mature and fresh album for the time.
Perdition City fue el inicio de una constante evolución y experimentación. La banda cambio por completo su sonido folk y metalero para dar pie a un sonido electrónico, ambiental y envolvente no dejando a un lado la atmosfera oscura y melancólica que siempre nos ha dado la banda. En este disco podemos escuchar un sonido futurista pero con toques de jazz como si se tratara de una película de cine noir. Este es un álbum muy maduro y fresco para le época.
Lyckantropen Themes and Svidd neger are completely ambient albums using references from darkwave, jazz at times and generally contain a powerful surround sound but to be honest it is not something that I would personally hear every day they are soundtracks of a short film and a feature film respectively and very minimalist for my taste.
Blood Inside brings us a more organic sound without as much electronics as in Perdition City. We can notice that with the return of real drums and guitars but this does not let Blood Inside stop being a rare album in a good sense of the word. It is an album that mixes progressive rock, ethereal voices, ambient and something that we could hear from old bands like Pink Floyd but of course with more effect and bizarre sounds.
Lyckantropen Themes y Svidd neger son álbumes completamente ambientales usando referencias del darkwave, el jazz en ocasiones y contienen en general un potente sonido envolvente pero siendo sinceros no es algo que personalmente escucharía a diario son bandas sonoras de un cortometraje y largometraje respectivamente y muy minimalistas para mi gusto.
Blood Inside nos trae un sonido más orgánico sin tanta electrónica como en Perdition City. Podemos notar eso con el regreso de baterías y guitarras reales pero esto no deja que Blood Inside deje de ser un álbum raro en el buen sentido de la palabra. Es un disco que mezcla rock progresivo, voces etéreas, ambient y algo de lo que pudiésemos escuchar de antiguas bandas como Pink Floyd pero claro con más efectismo y sonidos bizarros.
The Assassination of Julius Caesar is a fresh album, despite maintaining an electronic sound, it sounds completely different from Perdition City and Blood inside. Also counting with progressive touches in their music slightly similar to the new releases of the band Leprous but these counting with more synthesizers and more electronic production that sometimes winks at the music of the eighties, especially with that special sound on the drums.
Ulver Wolves Evolve or wolves evolve motto and I can say they are right. There is no album by this band that resembles a previous one, they all have new experimentations trying to create new atmospheres for the listeners and without paying attention to any type of criticism, which makes them authentic musicians.
The Assassination of Julius Caesar es un álbum fresco pese a mantenerse con un sonido electrónico suena completamente distinto a Perdition City y Blood inside. También contando con toques progresivos en su música parecido levemente a las nuevas entregas de la banda Leprous pero estos contando con más sintetizadores y más producción electrónica que a veces le hace guiños a la música de los ochenta sobre todo con ese sonido especial en la batería.
El lema de Ulver Wolves Evolve o los lobos evolucionan y puedo decir que están en lo cierto. No hay un álbum de esta banda que se parezca a uno anterior, todos cuentan con nuevas experimentaciones tratando de crear nuevas atmosferas a los oyentes y sin prestar atención a ningun tipo de crítica lo que los convierte en auténticos músicos.
Kristoffer Rygg, founder of the band and only original member, has shown us to make quality and genuine music, without conservatism or labels. They started making Black metal, one of the most conservative genres in metal, and they broke all paradigms after Perdition City. Yes, their works are electronic but neither has to do with the other, marking a clear difference between album and album.
The band apart from having a tremendously original sound also in its discography counts on being the soundtrack of films like Riverside. In short, a band that is respected within the community of musicians in their country and an example of what to do with music. Skold!
Kristoffer Rygg fundador de la banda y único miembro original nos ha demostrado hacer música de calidad y genuina, sin conservadurismos ni etiquetas. Empezaron a hacer Black metal, uno de los géneros más conservadores que hay dentro del metal y rompieron con todos los paradigmas a partir de Perdition City. Si, sus trabajos son electrónicos pero ninguno tiene que ver con el otro, marcando una diferencia clara entre álbum y álbum.
La banda aparte de contar con un sonido tremendamente original también en su discografía cuenta con ser la banda sonora de películas como Riverside. En pocas palabras una banda respetada dentro de la comunidad de músicos en su país y un ejemplo de lo que se debe hacer con la música. Skold !!
