I had to do running at school, but didn't enjoy it and so did nothing for a long time. I started again in my 40s to get fit and now I can do this. It takes a lot of work.

Any sort of cardio or extended strenuous activity puts you ahead of like half of the population. Sedentary life is far too common, and terrible.
The gym rat movement in the USA is actually a good thing to see, and I've never set foot in a gym.

I've used gyms before, but it's mostly running now. I want to stay in shape and stay healthy so this is a way to get there. The social side with things like parkrun is a bonus.
