I also experience "the wrong kind of pain" when working out with heavier weights sometimes, specially in elbows, forearms and shoulders. On the other hand, it was a regular work out routine what actually cured (almost completely) my tennis elbows. Finding out and using the right amount of weight seems to be the key here :)

I've been reading a lot about this and think that this strategy is the way forward. I am NOT going to stop lifting because of some tendonitis but I do think it is very important to listen to your pain.
