The Unpredictable Path of Self-Discovery: From Science to Accounting.

in HiveGhana7 months ago

Self-discovery is like a trip we take in our lives to learn more about ourselves and what we want to be. It's not a simple, direct route; it's more like a road with lots of turns and surprises. In my own journey of self-discovery, I've gone from really liking gadgets to being good at math and finding my way into accounting. It's been an interesting journey, and I wouldn't change it for anything.

In my junior high school days, I had a fascination with gadgets. My father, a practical man, saw this passion and told me that I would make a great engineer someday. Little did I know that this was just the first dot in a series of many that would eventually create a picture of my true self.

As I entered high school, I encountered a new passion – mathematics. My math teacher recognized my talent and encouraged me to pursue a career in business, particularly accounting. This presented a dilemma for me: my love for gadgets(🤔💭 my father's dream of seeing an engineer) and my newfound skill in mathematics (a new dream to be a business man and get a lot of mula💵) seemed to pull me in opposite directions. Yet, each experience was a vital dot on the path of self-discovery.

Well, I chose to study science in high school because I was advised that it would give me more options later on. In my country, if you do well in high school science, you can switch to any subject you like at the university. Since I was uncertain about my future, I went with science. Now here was the advantage - It taught me discipline and quick learning because science students have to study, write, and do lots of lab tests in a short time. This is what makes science students highly respected in high school. They nickname them "shakos" to mean a shark - figuratively saying they are super sharp and fast in their brains.

When I got to the university, my life took a turn. I changed my major to accounting, a field all about numbers. This is where I started to see how all the different parts of my journey fit together. Well, I must say that the shift was not easy at all. One time the Academic Registrer of my school looked right into my eyes and said , "you look like a confused boy, changing from science to accounting". But here's the twist, the discipline and skills I learned as a science student surprisingly helped me a lot in accounting. You see science students need to absorb a ton of information quickly, which makes them good at thinking fast and solving problems. These skills allowed me to do really really well in accounting.

A common belief was that accounting students were only skilled with numbers, and they struggled when it came to writing and public speaking. Well, you can probably guess what happened next – I changed that belief. My fellow accounting students chose me as their representative for presentations during our first and second years in university. In our university system, all majors, study together until the second semester of the second year, and then we specialize in different subjects.

During those presentations, I had the chance to compete against communication students (imagine that for a moment). And, surprisingly, I managed to win some of those competitions, proving that accounting students could excel not only in numbers but also in communication and public speaking. Well, all thanks to science right 😏.

In Conclusion

My journey of self-discovery has been anything but straightforward. I have explored different interests, faced challenges, and had various experiences that might have seemed unrelated at first. But looking back, I can now see that each of these things played a big role in making me who I am today. Self-discovery isn't just about finding one big passion or having a fixed identity. It's more about accepting that you're a complex and ever-changing person. When you connect the dots in your life you will realize that even the things that seem very different all fit together to create a beautiful picture. As I keep going on this unpredictable journey of self-discovery, I'm really excited to see what new interests and passions will pop up, and how they'll add to the constantly evolving picture of who I am.
