Server em!

what is good folks
so ya boy has been looking to upgrade the home lab for a bit and i stumbled on a pretty sick deal for a Dell R410 rack server... scooped it up immediately cause the price was just too good to pass on. Got it home, plugged it in, and holy hell... this thing is LOUD. I'm not talkin like a loud gaming PC, I mean it sounds like a commercial drone is preparing for liftoff in my office eh. Absolutely insane noise level just idling.
Apparently this is just how these enterprise serers are... they're meant for a server room where nobody cares about sound. The "proper" way to manage this is through something called iDRAC, which is Dell's remote access controller. It's this interface that lets you mess with the hardware settings even when the OS isn't running... pretty neat in theory. In practice? A total pain in my ass. I spent hours trying to get my computer to connect to the damn thing, fiddling with IP settings, direct connecting with an ethernet cable... nothing. Just would not connect, so I had no way to access the fan controls. Useless.
So Plan B... if you can't fix it from the outside, you gotta get inside. I was gonna run Ubuntu on it anyway so I figured there has to be a way to control the fans from the OS level. After a bunch of digging around on old forums I found some command line tools that can manually set the fan speeds.
After I confirmed I could actually control the fans, I got to work on a little scrip. It basically just polls the CPU temperature every few seconds and then sets the fan speed based on that. If temps are low, the fans run at minimum. If I start doing something heavy and the temps climb, the fans ramp up to match. Now it only sounds like a drone when its actually doing something heavy 😂.
The rest of the time its just a bit louder then a regular desktop. I'm pretty happy with the result, it took some grinding but the noise reduction is massive. Can't complain for the price I paid... just gotta be willing to get your hands dirty sometimes.

Hear and see for yourself

@bitcoinman's bits of wisdom

  • Invest only what you can afford to lose and be mindful of the potential risks.
  • Unless you can accept delivery stay away from futures and stick to physical.
  • Leverage is a great tool for losing money fast.
  • Numismatics for the lows stick to smart stacking baby.
  • Be cautious of new schemes in crypto, like ICOs, DeFi, and NFTs, do your research before investing.

Are you running any Bitcoin Miners ? They are very quiet now. Especially my little BitAxe that runs on 10 watts of power.
You can get some very good deals on Ant Miners out of Montreal … they will heat your home over the winter… and heat the pool over the summer.

Earn enough Bitcoin to buy beach front Property on Georgian Bay.

I've heard Bitaxe is inexpensive to operate, do you generate a profit easily with them?

I only make about 25-40 Satoshi a day but I earn $100 a day with my YouTube and Blurt.media Videos plus a lot more Crypto from Blurt.blog and PixelPoint.TV

Nice! What's the plan for the server now that you have the jet engine sound mitigated?
