The art
(1)
Neat vase mode print, comes out nice with a silk filament like in the picture but I did not use that but mine still came out nice I think lol
The print
I printed mine out with a color shifting PETG and with thicker walls this makes it fairly strong and I think it looks pretty nice even though the layer lines are much more visible then with silk PLA but it is also a lot more weak then regular PLA let and can't even touch PETG
The fluff
Man, I gotta vent for a minute. People see the physical stuff... the art prints I've been running for this series, or some of the 3D printed models I shared with you all... and they think it's just easy. Like you buy a $300 printer off Amazon, plug it in, and it just works.
It just doesn't.
Lemme tell ya, printing is a grind. It's failure. It's constant, expensive, soul-crushing failure until, just maybe, you get one good one.
This series has been brutal. On the 2D art printing side... you fight with colour calibration for hours. What looks perfect on my monitor comes out looking like a faded, greenish mess. You waste so much ink... and that stuff is a straight-up scam, costs a fortune. You finally get it dialled in, start a print, and the paper feeder decides to jam, or it pulls two sheets. Boom. Wasted.
And that's the easy part. The 3D printers... dawg... that's a whole different kind of pain, eh?
It's not an appliance, it's a high maintenance pet that hates you. You spend an hour levelling the bed... you know it's perfect. You start a 10-hour print. You come back two hours later... spaghetti. Just a giant, tangled mess of melted plastic. Why? Who knows. The filament was slightly damp. The temperature fluctuated half a degree. A ghost walked by.
I've spent more time fixing the printers than printing on them. Taking hotends apart to clear clogs. Replacing nozzles. Modifying the fan shrouds 'cause the stock ones are garbage. Flashing new firmware 'cause the old one had a bug. Finding out your print separated 8 hours in 'cause it didn't stick to teh bed right.
It ain't digital. You can't just hit ctrl-z. It's real-world failure. Wasted plastic, ink, paper, and most of all wasted time.
So yeah. Next time you see someone's physical printed work... just know it probably wasn't "click and print." It was probably 10 failures and a lot of swearing just to get that one piece. It's a hell of a process.
