The earthquake in Venezuela cracked a beam in my home, and I fear it might collapse [S.O.S.]
Hello to the entire Hive community.
Today I am turning to this platform not only to share the distressing situation we are facing following the powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake that struck Venezuela on June 24, but also to humbly ask for your support and solidarity to prevent a tragedy in my own home.
I live in Punta de Mata, Monagas.
Fortunately, my family and I are physically unharmed after the scare caused by the earthquake, but the walls and structure of our house were not so lucky.
As you can see in the attached photos, the main load-bearing beam supporting the ceiling of our living room has suffered a critical fracture.
The damage in detail:
- Structural fracture:
The concrete beam has a vertical and diagonal crack that runs completely through it.
- Previous moisture damage:
Severe water stains from leaks are visible on the ceiling, and this moisture seepage weakened the concrete. It is very likely that it also caused the internal steel rebar to rust over time; the impact of the earthquake was the trigger that caused the structure to collapse at that point.
Why is repair urgent, and what are the risks?
This beam is a vital structural support.
Since it is fractured, it can no longer safely support the weight of the roof. If an aftershock occurs, if it continues to rain and water accumulates, or simply due to the force of gravity, the roof could collapse on top of us, causing total property damage or, in the worst-case scenario, loss of life.
How should this crack be repaired from a technical standpoint?
Given the severity of the damage, the minimum steps required to safely resolve this issue are:
- Emergency shoring: Place wooden or metal props (construction jacks) under the beam to temporarily support the weight of the roof and prevent it from collapsing while work is being done.
- Removal of damaged concrete: Chisel away the concrete around the crack to assess the condition of the internal steel rebar.
- Steel reinforcement: If the rebar is severely rusted or broken, new steel reinforcement (rebar) must be welded or tied in place.
- Structural filling and sealing: Rebuild the beam section using high-strength structural repair mortar.
- Waterproofing: Repair the roof leak on the upper side to prevent water from corroding the steel again.
- My current situation and why I’m asking for help:
I am currently unemployed and facing an extremely difficult financial situation.
At this time, it is impossible for me to cover basic daily food expenses, so purchasing construction materials such as cement, sand, rebar, and structural additives—or paying for the labor of a mason or technician—is completely out of my reach.
Repairing this is not a cosmetic luxury; it is an urgent measure to protect my family’s lives. We have nowhere else to go.

El sismo en Venezuela fracturó la viga de mi hogar y temo un colapso [S.O.S]
Hola a toda la comunidad de Hive.
Hoy recurro a esta plataforma no solo para compartir la angustiosa situación que vivimos tras el fuerte terremoto de magnitud 7.5 que sacudió a Venezuela el pasado 24 de junio, sino también para solicitar de manera muy humilde su apoyo y solidaridad para prevenir una tragedia en mi propio hogar.
- Vivo en Punta de Mata, Monagas.
Afortunadamente mi familia y yo nos encontramos físicamente bien tras el susto del sismo, pero las paredes y la estructura de nuestra casa no corrieron con la misma suerte.
Como pueden observar en las fotografías adjuntas, la viga de carga principal que sostiene el techo de nuestra sala se fracturó de forma crítica.
El daño en detalle:
- Fractura estructural:
La viga de concreto presenta una grieta vertical y diagonal que la atraviesa por completo.
- Humedad previa:
En el techo se aprecian manchas severas de filtración de agua y estas filtraciones de humedad debilitaron el concreto, es muy probable que también oxidaron las cabillas de acero internas a lo largo del tiempo, el impacto del sismo fue el detonante para que la estructura colapsara en ese punto.
¿Por qué es urgente reparar y cuáles son los riesgos?
Esta viga es un elemento de soporte vital.
Al estar fracturada, ya no tiene la capacidad de sostener el peso del techo de manera segura, si ocurre una réplica del sismo, si continúa lloviendo y acumulándose agua, o simplemente por el efecto de la gravedad, el techo podría desplomarse sobre nosotros, lo que causaría daños materiales totales o, en el peor de los casos, pérdidas humanas.
¿Cómo se debe reparar técnicamente esta grieta?
Consultando la gravedad del daño, los pasos mínimos necesarios para solucionar esto de forma segura son:
- Apuntalamiento de emergencia: Colocar puntales de madera o metal (gatos de construcción) debajo de la viga para soportar el peso del techo provisionalmente y evitar que colapse mientras se trabaja.
- Remoción del concreto dañado: Picar el concreto alrededor de la grieta para evaluar el estado de las cabillas de acero internas.
- Refuerzo de acero: Si las cabillas están muy oxidadas o rotas, se deben soldar o amarrar nuevos refuerzos de acero (cabillas).
- Vaciado y sellado estructural: Reconstruir la sección de la viga utilizando mortero de reparación estructural de alta resistencia.
- Impermeabilización: Reparar la filtración del techo en la parte superior para evitar que el agua vuelva a pudrir el acero.
Mi situación actual y por qué pido ayuda:
Actualmente me encuentro desempleado y enfrentando una situación económica sumamente difícil.
En este momento se me hace imposible cubrir los gastos básicos de alimentación diarios, por lo que adquirir materiales de construcción como cemento, arena, cabillas, aditivos estructurales, o pagar la mano de obra de un albañil o técnico, está completamente fuera de mi alcance.
Reparar esto no es un lujo estético, es una medida urgente para resguardar la vida de mi familia. No tenemos otro lugar a donde ir.
