Today I made this drawing of a small colorful fish. I really want to learn how to use watercolors, but since I don’t have access to them, I thought about trying to imitate the watercolor style with a drawing program. For that, I’ll be using Ibis Paint, as it offers many free and high-quality brushes, plus you can also use community brushes. But before getting to the fish I drew today, I’d like to share my daily drawing practice, this time focused on digital art.
Hoy hice este dibujo de un pequeño pez de colores. Tengo muchos deseos de aprender a usar acuarelas, pero como no tengo acceso a ellas pensé en tratar de imitar el estilo acuarelas con un programa de dibujo. Para eso estaré usando Ibis Paint, ya que cuenta con muchos pinceles gratuitos y de buena calidad, además de que puedes usar los de la comunidad. Pero antes de llegar al pez que dibujé hoy me gustaría compartir mi práctica diaria de dibujo, esta vez centrada en el dibujo digital.
Today’s practice will focus on the forms of cylinders and cubes, so that’s what we’ll be working on. But before that, it’s important to warm up the hand a little, so I did some circles and different types of hatching. I also tried applying them on surfaces and varying tonal values. It’s very difficult to jump from traditional to digital, and although digital is much more immediate and clean, the way to achieve results is very different.
La práctica de hoy se centrará en las formas de cilindros y cubos, así que será lo que estaremos practicando. Pero antes hay que calentar un poco la mano, y lo hice con unos círculos y distintos tipos de hatching. También traté de aplicarlos sobre superficies y variar los valores tonales. Es muy difícil saltar del tradicional al digital, y aunque el digital es mucho más inmediato y limpio, la forma de lograr los resultados es muy distinta.
Now it’s time to dive into the part about forms, because we’ll move from flat shapes to 3D ones. We’ll try rotating some shapes around their imaginary axes and look for similarities between geometric forms and everyday objects. This is an exercise that may seem simple to some and boring to others, but I consider it very necessary, even to do it daily, even if you already handle it well, because it helps to imagine volumes on the plane and to compose shapes.
Ahora sí toca mojarnos un poco en la parte de las formas, porque iremos desde formas planas a formas 3D. Trataremos de girar algunas formas sobre sus ejes imaginarios y buscar semejanzas entre formas geométricas y objetos de la vida cotidiana. Este es un ejercicio que para muchos puede resultar sencillo y para otros aburrido, pero yo lo considero muy necesario, incluso hacerlo diariamente aunque se maneje bien, porque ayuda a imaginar los volúmenes en el plano y a componer formas.
Now we’ll focus specifically on the cylinder and the cone to imagine objects from our daily life. For now, the ones that come to mind are: a cup of hot coffee, a stopper, a cocktail shaker, a glass bottle, a thimble, an aluminum can, a plastic bottle, a beer mug, a spinning top, and a castle tower. I especially like how the aluminum can turned out.
Ahora nos centraremos específicamente en el cilindro y el cono para imaginar objetos de nuestra vida diaria. Por ahora se me ocurren los siguientes: una taza de café caliente, un tapón, una coctelera, una botella de vidrio, un dedal, una lata de aluminio, una botella plástica, una jarra de cerveza, una peonza y una torre de un castillo. Me gusta en especial cómo quedó la lata de aluminio.
Now it’s the turn of cubes, but after researching properly, to be considered a cube it must have all faces equal, and when they are not equal and parallel they are called polyhedra, not cubes. Haha, important math and geography lessons. But going back to imagination and form, I took things from my desk that had that shape and tried to draw them: a book, a brand-new eraser, my cellphone, my laptop, a Rubik’s cube, and a USB stick. I think this is one of the most common shapes in everyday objects, but when it comes to drawing it, it’s one of the hardest to rotate and understand in perspective, so I recommend drawing many cubes in all views and positions.
Ahora es el turno de los cubos, pero investigando bien, para considerar algo un cubo tiene que tener todas las caras iguales, y cuando no son iguales y paralelas se llaman poliedros, no cubos. Jajaja, clases de matemática y geografía muy importantes. Pero bueno, regresando a la imaginación y la forma, aquí tomé cosas que tenía sobre mi mesa que tuvieran esa forma y traté de dibujarlas: un libro, una goma recién estrenada, mi celular, mi laptop, un cubo de Rubik y un USB. Creo que esta es de las formas más comunes en los objetos cotidianos, pero a la hora de dibujarla es de las más difíciles de girar y entender su perspectiva, así que recomiendo dibujar muchos cubos en todas las vistas y posiciones.
And now, the complete drawing of today, the little fish that opened the blog. It was simply a drawing I wanted to make to move beyond simple shapes and create a much more organic form. The first step was a simple sketch of what I wanted, in a light color. I want to draw those small colorful fish that are very common, guppies, I think they’re called in many places.
Y ahora sí, el dibujo completo de hoy, ese pecesito que abrió el blog. Pues simplemente fue un dibujo que quise hacer para dejar atrás las formas simples y hacer una forma mucho más orgánica. Lo primero fue un simple boceto de lo que quería en color claro. Quiero hacer esos peces de colores pequeños que abundan mucho, guppies creo que se llaman en muchos lados.
Since I want to simulate the traditional watercolor process, what I’ll do is outline my drawing with a brush that mimics a very fine fiber. I’m using a brush that varies with pressure to approximately two pixels in thickness. That’s how all the lines turned out, and I liked them quite a lot.
Como quiero simular el proceso de acuarelas tradicional, lo que haré será delinear mi dibujo con un pincel que simule una fibra bien fina. Estoy usando un pincel que varía con presión a aproximadamente dos píxeles de grosor. Así quedaron todas las líneas, me gustaron bastante.
The next step was simply coloring with those beautiful textured brushes from Ibis Paint. It’s wonderful and feels very good and light to color this way.
Lo siguiente simplemente fue colorear con esos bellos pinceles texturizados de Ibis Paint. Es hermoso y se siente muy bien y ligero colorear así.
I would really love to try real watercolors someday, with good watercolor paper, and be able to create something like this. Thank you for accompanying me for another day of drawing.
