Vuelta de Cuba Occidental Day 1 - Havana to Bahia Honda

in Cycling17 days ago

Started on a rainy day in Havana.

After picking up the bicycle i rented it didn't stop pooring down until at least one pm, after which i needed lunch to be able to ride the planned 100 km. During lunch it started raining again...

Finally started pedaling around 14.40 guessing i could do the hundred km in 4 hours riding with breaks totaling up to one hour, which would be exactly in time for sunset :)
Still catched some rain but not too heavy and anyway got wet completely from the water splashing up from my tires while leaving the capital.

After a while everything dried up and i reached the next province Artemisa following the northern coast line.

Halfway rode through Mariel town and stopped for a soft drink and some biscuits for the second half.

After crossing the motorway there were even less cars then in the first part, and horses became more and more frequent as means of transport.

The further i rode the more beautiful the landscape became and in the very late afternoon finally the sun came through as well.

With a heavy bike and the bags with a few kilos more on the back the beautiful but rolling landscape in the last part brought my average speed down more then expected so the last 10 kilometers were in the dark, arriving 45 minutes later then planned but satisfied and finally time to get my beer at the end of the ride! Even got half a pack of galletas left :)

That's a serious ride; well done!
You did that just on a half packet of galettes?
