in Architecture+Design2 years ago (edited)
Hello everyone! I am very happy to post for the first time in this community to show you the beautiful St. Thomas the Apostle Church in the city of Sosnowiec in Poland. I must confess that since I arrived in Sosnowiec, this building or this church has dazzled me and I was waiting for the day when I could enter to know it and of course show it to all of you.

That expected day was Sunday, because in my family we are used to go to the Catholic church on some Sundays to give thanks for all things. So I took advantage of the fact that I was going to mass to observe this beautiful place both inside and outside. So I set out to go to 19 Orla Street or Pogoń district in Sosnowiec which is where this parish is located with a great neo-gothic style.

I still don't speak Polish, but thanks to the translator I could understand what it says on the plaque about the construction of this spectacular church, which was built between 1904 - 1911 and designed by the Polish architect Józef Pomian-Pomianowskiego.

And yes, I had to zoom out to be able to show you the whole front of this big building made in red brick and with three naves (but below I show you the interior), I think that without a doubt this parish or church gives a special touch to the beautiful city of Sosnowiec.

As I arrived early to the mass, I decided to look around a little bit and if you are standing in front of the church, you will notice that just on the right side is the parish house, and also around it there are many trees and nature that combined with the architecture of this building make it perfect, but now it was time to go inside.

At this point I fell in love with this church with that beautiful ceiling painted in turquoise blue, and with those lines painted in gold and white, no doubt they give it a spectacular touch. Also with those beautiful crystal chandeliers that although they were turned off, they also make it look phenomenal, but I would like to see them turned on sometime, for sure the church will look so elegant.

The colorful and beautiful interior stained glass window, the brightly lit presbytery, the design of the wooden confessionals, some images that I recognized such as the Virgin of Perpetual Help or Mother of God, Christ with the cross on his shoulders, Christ on the cross, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, among others. Undoubtedly, each of these details together make it incredible.

There are many benches available and also red chairs to receive all visitors, and another thing that caught my attention are the 2 screens one on the left and one on the right where they put the lyrics of the songs that although I did not know them I could sing them because I understand some pronunciations of Polish lyrics.

The mass was also incredible, although I must confess that I only understood the alleluia and the amen, but seeing how the priest interacts with the people is nice. So I assure you that you will love it if you visit this great temple, which I fell in love with, all its structure, every detail, every image, everything. I would like to know if you were enchanted by it through these photos. I hope you liked it!

Fascinating church! Isn't it interesting that your original intent of attending mass also became an architectural tour? haha 😁 I'm truly glad you found the time to document that gorgeous building for our amazement. 😊

Because the Neo-Gothic architectural character is noted for incorporating gargoyles as part of its distinctive design signature, have you noticed these sculptural creatures on the exterior facade? Or were there any at all?

Greetings @evelynchacin. A warm welcome to the Architecture+Design Community! 😊

Really fascinating! I loved it! And yes, you're right, it's interesting that the architect tour grew out of going to mass. And the truth is that I am also happy that I had time to observe and contemplate this beautiful building. I wasn't sure about the gargoyles in the neo-gothic style, so now I'm sure, but I really don't think I saw any. Thanks for the welcome and greetings too! 🤗

Oh really - no gargoyles? Isn't that strange? I wonder why that Gothic church hasn't incorporated these typical architectural characteristics found in other famous religious buildings of the same design style. 🤔

Hmm...this matter probably needs further investigation, right? Sometimes our curiosity simply doesn't seem to be quenched. 😁 Nevertheless, thank you for showcasing this marvelous masterpiece of architecture from Poland! Until your next awesome post, have fun! 😊

I'll go back there and take a good look, but I'm pretty sure there's no gargoyle and it's very curious! Delighted to be able to show you this wonderful building. Cheers!

The exterior of this church is old-school but the inside is amazing and looks neat.

You're right! But it is really beautiful inside!

Beautiful in red brick color and the grand tall design.

Yes, I love the red bricks and their tall design. Is beautiful!

Beautiful place. If there is one thing I like about sacred art in architecture, it is the combination of beauty and functionality. Not only do the ornamentations and fine finishes give character and gestures but also make it feel more like a spiritual and pleasant place. Good article to get to know it. A big hug.

It is really beautiful! And I agree with you, the beauty and functionalities make this place impressive and pleasant! Thank you for passing by. Cheers!

Saludos!

Quite beautiful from the design of this church, the building has an ancient design but is much more beautiful with its extraordinary shape and design.

Yes, it is an old but charming design. The union of all the details make it extraordinary. Greetings!
