My Colonial Havana: "The Templete" [EN/ES]

in Architecture+Design4 months ago (edited)

English Version

It is told that more than 500 years ago, under the shelter of a large Ceiba tree, the first mass was celebrated and the first colonial town council of the recently inaugurated town of San Cristóbal de La Habana was established.

I wanted to start this publication by narrating this historical event that indicates the creation of the Wonder City, this is how its history is remembered. Saint Christopher of Havana, present-day city of Havana and capital of Cuba, was founded in the year 1516 and was the sixth villa built by the Spanish authorities on the island, which at that time was a colony of Spain.

Many years after the event that gave rise to its beginnings, in the year 1754 the then governor of Cuba, ordered to build in the same place where the first mass of the city was celebrated a stone pillar to honor this fact. At its highest point, it had a sculpture of the Virgin of Pilar, patron saint of the Hispanity, since on the day when her cult is celebrated, Christopher Columbus disembarked in America for the first time. More than seventy years later, due to the deterioration of this column, the governor Don Francisco Dionisio Vives y Planes made the decision to restore it. Therefore, the sculpture of the virgin was replaced and a white marble bust of the first Governor of Havana was also placed. It was also decided to begin the construction of a new building that would bear the name of "El Templete".

I am always very excited to visit Havana. Cubans always say that when we walk around it, it seems as if we have been transported back in time, and this feeling is very real. Despite the years that have passed, walking through these squares and cobblestone streets makes us feel as if we were passing through another era. Colonial Havana is amazing, it is a world heritage site and great restoration work has been carried out to preserve it and keep its history alive.

Despite being a Havana native and having walked through this square several times, I had never before entered the place where the Templete is located. But this time I was very happy to have done it for the first time and to be able to admire this piece of my city's history.

The Templete is the representation of a small Roman temple, it has six columns at its entrance and is located on a small stone staircase. Its floor is made of marble, black and white, and at the top, on its pediment, there is a large tombstone with golden letters and the date of its inauguration.

Its interior is simple and on its walls there are three large paintings by the painter Jean Baptiste Vermay. Two of them reflect the historical fact of the celebration of the first mass of the city under the ceiba tree, and the third one represents the inauguration of the Templete. The mortal remains of this great painter rest next to those of his wife inside the temple, accompanied by his beautiful paintings.

Outside the place there is a lot of vegetation, the gardens are very beautiful. But what is most striking is the Ceiba tree, which has become a symbol of the city. The original ceiba no longer exists, and in its place several have been planted in the same place where the first one was supposed to be. Every November 16th, in celebration of the city's anniversary, many people, both locals and foreign visitors, come here to participate in the rite that takes place around this Ceiba tree. It is tradition to turn it three times counterclockwise, while touching it with the hands and asking for health and good wishes.

This ritual is related to the African religion, since the Ceiba tree is venerated by this religion, which represents an important part of the Cuban identity and culture.

I was very glad to be able to visit the Templete because I was able to appreciate up close an important part of the history of my beautiful city.

Siempre me emociona mucho visitar La Habana.

Hello @jordy0827 , one of the things I appreciate about this community is that it gave me the task of observing the architecture of my spaces, even though I have passed by many times and appreciate its beauty and history.

The templete is beautiful and so is the new ceiba. When I go to Cuba, I want to go and do the ceiba ritual.

I'm glad you're coming to Cuba, I'm sure you'll like it a lot, if you haven't already come before. The ritual is done in the month of November so if it is on that date that you are here, I will even accompany you.

It was an affirmation, a decree to be fulfilled and become a reality. 🤣

Thank you so much, I will know who can be my tour guide @jordy0827 when God decides I go.

I seemed to see a civilization in a corner of the world. Thank you for wanting to talk about this!

Thanks for reading me 🤗
