Hi all ๐๐ป
With my next post into the Architecture+Design Community I want to show you the Saint Agatha's Tower / Red Tower ~ Torri ta' Sant'Agata / It-Torri L-Aฤงmar in Mellieha.
Located in the street/ Triq Tad-Dahar, Il-Mellieฤงa, Malta ๐ฒ๐น
On Google maps see the yellow star โญ๏ธ:
The islands of Malta look like this:
Some already know I lived there for a year. So I explored most of the islands ๐
Photos are taken with my iPhone on 14 June 2020.
We went there just after they finished a new paint layer on the wallsโฆ it took a long time, but it was worth it waiting to see it freshly painted.
More information about the tower you find In this website!
It states:
โSaint Agatha's Tower, also known as the Red Tower, Mellieฤงa Tower or Fort Saint Agatha, is a large bastioned watchtower in Mellieฤงa, Malta.
It was built between 1647 and 1649, as the sixth of the Lascaris towers. The tower's design is completely different from the rest of the Lascaris towers, but it is similar to the earlier Wignacourt towers. St. Agatha's Tower was the last large bastioned tower to be built in Malta.
The design is by the architect Antonio Garsin. The structure consists of a square tower with four corner towers.
Cannon ports in the turrets gave interlocking fields of fire commanding the base of the walls and the gateway, with other large cannon ports in the faces of the main tower. The outer walls are approximately four metres thick at the base and the interior of the tower is enclosed by a barrel vaulted roof. The corner turrets are surmounted by very characteristic fish tail crenelations. A chapel was located within the tower.
Like many of the Knights' early defensive structures, St. Agatha's Tower was strengthened during the early 18th century. A low profile rubble wall entrenchment was built around the flanks of the tower in the form of a redan trace. Due to this, the tower also functioned as a redoubt, similar to the one at ลปabbar during the French blockade.
It continued to have a military function throughout the British period, and was manned during both World Wars. From the British period it continued its military function being used as a radar station by the Armed Forces of Malta.
By the close of the 20th century St. Agatha's Tower was in poor repair, with one turret completely missing and another turret severely damaged. The tower was gradually restored by Din l-Art ฤฆelwa, starting in 1999 and completed in 2001, assisted by substantial industrial sponsorship. As part of the restoration work, the damaged turrets were replaced, the walls and roof were rebuilt, eroded stone facing was replaced, interior walls were scraped and painted, the original floor was uncovered, and the interior staircase to the roof was rebuilt. Due to the extreme unevenness of the floor, this was recently covered by a wooden surface with glass apertures through which one can view the original slabs. The tower is still in the care of Din l-Art ฤฆelwa and is open to the public.โ
Let me show you the beautiful Tower now.
View from afar from the parking lot.
With the rubble wall entrenchment before it.
Walking around it we see the corners.
Having these views around us.
Another corner tower.
You see here why it was build right hereโฆ as a watch tower. The over view it has is vast.
The tower again.
View towards Mellieha beach ๐ this one is very crowded in the summer and you do not get a spot when you arrive late. Not my kind of thing ๐ so I avoid hahaha
The other side. We see here the entrance bridge.
Walking passed and looking back.
It wasnโt open this day, but we could freely walk around the entire tower. Here you see some details and the designs of the tower and walls.
View towards the other sideโฆ the land is barren as the summers are very hot. Not much trees are left on this island.
Looking towards the tower again.
And the Mellieha beach with the Gฤงadira Nature Reserve in front of it. It is โtheโ area where birds will nest in Malta. The waters you see with little sand islands.
Another view from afar towards the tower. I love the red colour and the blues of the skyโฆ it makes it really pop!
And with this last photograph, I want to show you another photo from the faded in colour building, while it still was in scaffolding before they finished. This was 6 October 2019.
So they took about 9 months to finish the works. It is a constant upkeep to keep this colour fresh and bright. Due to the hot sun, with no protection, it fades very quickly and becomes a pale pink over time.
Until next time!
Hope you enjoyed my photos of this RED TOWER in MALTA. ๐ฒ๐น
Thank you for looking and reading ๐ ๐๐ป If you ever are on the island of Malta, do go to this Castle and view it for yourself.
Any questions or comments, let me know. Always happy to help.
Have a great Sunday all ๐

Great way to start the new week! Thanks ๐๐ป๐
That red tower is awesome and the views amazing what a cool place
Love you shared shots of it from all kinds of angles
Thanks a lot @tattoodjay ๐ it is a pretty cool tower. Looks castle like ๐
I was glad we could walk all the way around it, close by. Some times these kind of buildings are surrounded by gates and fences or even walls. Not here. So it is always a great day out walking around it.
Indeed very much like a castle and then that nice warm red color so striking and interesting
Yeah it was great it wasnโt fenced in and access restricted
I think they can do that as Malta is really very tiny and doesnโt have a large population, although it is very crowded.
Not sure if you noticed but I got 2 double comments from you here and on another post. Maybe a glitchโฆ wanted you to know ๐
That is a plus of it being a small Island :)
sorry about the duplicate comments one of the apps isnt playing well for some reason on my tablet, using a different front end now so hopefully no more duplicate comments
All good now ๐
It is in many ways a plus @tattoodjay
Indeed very much like a castle and then that nice warm red color so striking and interesting
Yeah it was great it wasnโt fenced in and access restricted
Wow, awesome!
I noticed that there is hardly any vegetation.
I bet they import all vegetables and greens there,
or their diet hardly comprise of veggies?
Hahaha!
Thanks a lot @silversaver888
There were farms on the island but the variety of vegetables was not large. Most comes from Italy. So crazy high prices for food.
The diet consist out of fishโฆ and rabbit. Donโt think I have seen a cow or pig other than one enclosed farm. Nothing free running in fields ๐
We didnโt get used to living there for many reasons, work had relocated us there, but the lack of green was one of them. It was also very polluted due to construction literally everywhere, fumes from cars and the dry grounds.
For a holiday it sure is stunning, but livingโฆ another story.
Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! ๐๐ฅณ๐
Did you know you have your own profile map?
And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
Thank you so much @pinmapple team ๐
Have a wonderful day ๐๐ปโ๏ธ๐๐ป
This is eye catching. Amaaaaaazing. Thanks for sharing with us. Would look cool even on the wall as a Pic picture. Just cooooool. ๐๐๐ผ๐ถ๐ค
Thanks a lot @akida
I do have prints available of one of the photos: In my Printshop!
It comes on so many objects in all price ranges ๐ I should have included this in my post but forgotโฆ ๐ as usual, hope next time.
Have a great Sunday further. ๐๐ป๐
Aaaaw you have even a print shop for that. Marvelous, how could I think differently. ๐ ๐ถ๐ You also sell them here in the nftshowroom.com? Just asking... ๐ค๐โบ๏ธ๐Have an genius day my dear. Rain and clouds we have today... Damnit... Lol
I do have a print shop @akida thanksโฆ will have to add some more artworks and photographs soon and promote it a bit more ๐
I havenโt done nftโs yet or looked further into it. As some people say it is good to go there and some say it is a waste of timeโฆ what are your experiences with NFT? What are the general replies that you get?
My art btw is super realistic so not sure it will work there, or I need to design something completely different for it. Not talking about photographs here ๐
Sorry to hear about the rain and clouds, here it will be the hottest day so far from this yearโฆ pppffff โ๏ธ
But still: Have a wonderful day today ๐๐ป๐๐๐ป I will enjoy mine, thank you kindly ๐
I have to check out your shop from time to time than....you add a link always to your regulary post right? So I will look forward for it. Normally even photographs, art, music,...everything can be a NFT I would say ;) I do it cause I am an artist in my heart and like to have such a portfolio. Of course its nothing for fast money...but when it was in the history of art...? LMAO, mostly artist get famouse after their lives.... :P
I think in the future this NFT Platforms will become more normal to use. Like now a shop...You know what I mean? I look around there too, if I find something nice. Also I am buying some NFTs (if I have enought in my wallet ;))
Digital hugs out to yaaaaaaaaaaa
Thanks @akida ๐
Think I will include from now onwards my printshop links at the bottom, maybe a wise move to do ๐
Yes, like you sayโฆ nothing fast I understand and in the future it can be like a shop now.
And you are so right. Artists do get famous after their death hahaha silly world that way.
Maybe I should look further into it a bit more ๐
Thanks a lot, digital hugggsss back at ya, enjoy today ๐ค๐
how are you dear friend @littlebee4 good afternoon

have a beautiful afternoon
Hello dear friend @jlufer ๐๐ป
Thank you so much ๐ I just had to share this beautiful building here.
I liked walking around it and that I could get that close by. It was just finished painting. So the colour was magnificent.
Thank you kindly have a beautiful afternoon too โ๏ธ
Hello @littlebee4 What a beautiful tower and what a spectacular place, it's good that it was remodeled. I would love to go to a place like this, beautiful๐
Hello @lileisabel ๐๐ป๐

Hope your weekend was great with loads of happiness ๐
Have a wonderful evening and good start of the new week!
thank you thousand, @littlebee4, see you๐
You are so welcome dear @lileisabel ๐ ๐๐ป
a beautiful place. I hope I can visit here
Thank you so much @nnurdiani ๐ hope you can ๐๐ป๐
I like when they restore these types of buildings! Makes it really interesting to see what it may have looked like when it was first built. Itโs certainly a useful structure for the region to have before modern technology, with a view like that!
Yes me too, a little bit of history around us is just great ๐ that way it will be preserved for generations to come. I like exploring and learning more about these kind of things.
Have a great Monday!
Hi Jackie @littlebee4. Wow! The Saint Agatha's Tower on the island of Malta is definitely a striking building! With its deep red, brick-themed, or terracotta-colored walls, it's simply difficult to miss it! With its stark contrast against the bright blue sky, that building surely pops as you mentioned. Plus, with its strategic location and commanding views of the entire site, it's surely helpful in spotting invading enemy forces advancing on the island. ๐
Is this building still used as a watchtower today, or has it been completely converted into a museum of history for visiting tourists?
Hi @storiesoferne ๐๐ป๐
It surely is a striking building. Seen from afar. I didnโt have photographs of that, but luckily a lot from close by. When we first arrived in the island it was completely faded and cracked and soon after they started to restore it, until we almost left the island a year later.
Nowadays it is converted to a museum that is entirely run by volunteers. Giving you informations about the history of it and the surrounding area.
I never visited inside as it was closed for a long time. So have only read about it.
Have a wonderful Monday further ๐๐ป๐
Okay, I see. And it looks like that historical building has been well-maintained and preserved by the volunteers. Architectural relics like the Saint Agatha's Tower are a great testament to the ancient era and will surely be a remarkable heritage to be proud of, especially for the citizens of Malta. ๐
You too @littlebee4, have an awesome week ahead! ๐๐
Yes, they did a great job the volunteers. All for generations to come so they can see their heritage and know more how it used to be. Places and buildings like this should be treasured. ๐ Iโm glad some people step up when governments donโt.
Thank you kindly @storiesoferne ๐ so far it is lovely and the sun is shining bright. Feels like summer already. โ๏ธ
Wow! Looks like the sunny weather and the summer season have a lot of wonderful experiences in store for you. Don't forget to wear sunglasses and suntan lotion then...lol ๐๐
It sure is a great season, can get a bit to warm too.
I have to be very careful with the sun that I donโt burn. Even winter months can make my face burn by the sun.
You wonโt find me sunbathing anywhere ๐ but exploring new areas yep. In the shade hahaha
Oh well, if that's the case, it would be healthy to hide your face away from the burning rays of the sun. A really huge hat would help, I think. ๐ Stay safe always @littlebee4. ๐
Awe that red tower is phenomenal. Stunning!
Thank you so much @bloghound ๐
you are very welcome, my friend! :)
