When I perceive the quality of a space...

in Architecture+Design3 years ago (edited)

Human nature varies on the quality of spaces, how? The answer is very simple, people prefer spaces according to ergonomics. Proportionate nature helps an individual to perceive a space and then human psychology can easily define the quality of spaces. When you find yourself in a large space for example A vacant stadium or a vast field, automatically you will feel lost. It takes time to perceive the large space and due to our visual limitations and aperture angle, we can't perceive the entire space so easily. On the other hand, if a space is too small comparing to your scale or ergonomics, you will feel exhausted. Small space somehow causes huge damage to human psychology; for example: if you are stuck in a coffin; how will you gonna feel?

Space constantly surrounds our being. On the other hand, we can say we are encompassed by space. Through the mass of space, we see and move forms, hear sounds, feel the breezes and smell the fragrances of nature. But space is formless like a vapor, you will feel it by visualizing forms, dimensions, and scale. All of these qualities depend on our perception of the spatial boundaries...

Honestly speaking if I start elaborating the details of space and its quality, this post will never end...

When I walk on the street, my psychology automatically starts visualizing the definitions of each space. I start perceiving the quality of spaces by observing the surrounding elements. Obviously different types of forms and elements boost the quality of a space and create a pleasant visual effect for human beings.

Every space provides us different vibes, I have mentioned that earlier. There is a huge difference between interior and urban spaces. Interior spaces need to be defined by maintaining a human scale and user basis. There is a term called "providing adequate space" that needs to be achieved. Humans never prefer congested/confined spaces. On the other hand, when it comes to considering city scale, urban elements and forms help to create a quality and friendly space according to human scale by reducing VOID.

This is a congested space according to city-scale but to avoid distortion and to define the quality of the space, these umbrellas have been used as urban elements. Of course, purposely done, not only it is defining the entrance of a restaurant, but also, it is boosting the quality of the space. Existing forms are there but these elements are providing the quality of the space. These elements are also helping an individual to perceive the spatial boundaries of that specific space.

Let's talk about colors. Colors always play with our mind and psychology and we, humans always prefer colors to feel happy and pleasant. There is always a difference between monochrome and colors, if you notice the difference, you will understand what I am trying to say. No matter, how much we love black, we don't wanna see black color everywhere. Colors boost our energy and make us feel happy.

Maybe this design has been created for aesthetic purposes but this small change is putting a lot of value in human psychology. Perhaps, nobody cares what is happening here, or maybe nobody has that much time to perceive the quality of this space but when I saw this space in person, I have automatically analyzed the quality of this small space...

With just umbrellas, the alley became more attractive.

Yes, for sure... Thank you...

You're welcome.

But space is formless like a vapor, you will feel it by visualizing forms, dimensions, and scale. All of these qualities depend on our perception of the spatial boundaries.

Indeed, space is the raw material on which we conceptualize and design our beautiful ideas and principles for architecture! Thank you @priyanarc for this insightful post!

That alley with colourful umbrellas are beautiful. I could relate with how you felt joyful after being in such vibrant environment.
