And I entered Nuestra Señora de los Dolores | Medellín - Colombia

Diapositiva3.PNG

Greetings friends of Hive and the Architecture+Design community, I hope you are very well. I come to show you the interior of the church Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, a catholic temple of Medellin of neo-Byzantine architecture that I had already shown from the outside some time ago here in the community and I had pending the challenge of entering to know it inside, against the fear that these places give me because of the statues that has for worship, this happens to me since I was a child but it seems that I'm growing up. The good news is that I made it and here I show you the inside of the church Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, more commonly known as the church of America, because it is in the Comuna America in the city of Medellin.

It all starts being in front of the church waiting for the bus, it was 6:30 pm, it was almost getting dark and I start taking pictures of the main facade of the church, trying to take a picture in the blue hour, but I'm not as good as @dimascastillo90. I was just doing some test shots and I see that the doors are open. On the facade there are three doors, one central and two side doors. I keep thinking whether to enter or not, because it looked empty and I was very undecided but it was my chance and I decide to take advantage of it to show its interior in the architecture community. First I look inside from the central door.

Then I peek out from the left side door.

I kind of thought about it for a long time because when I entered there were parishioners, because the worship began. Where did they all come from?

When I entered I was shocked, it is a very ornate place, very beautiful and architecturally majestic. It has three naves, as you can see, the central one and the two lateral ones. There is a lot of elegance in the walls and ceilings. From the entrance you can already feel the silence and respect. You can see at the entrance two marble basins with water that the priest blesses and people use it to cross themselves, that is a ritual they do when they arrive at the temple. The water basins are at the foot of the two columns of the arch that marks the beginning of the central aisle. At the back is the main altar and I felt that I had to be very respectful to take the pictures.

On the structure what catches my attention is the ceiling, columns and arches. The ceiling is highly decorated with paintings, hanging lamps, moldings and architectural elements that give it beauty and are also necessary for the support of the structure.

The main altar was decorated with flowers, the truth is that I did not get that close, but you could see the pulpit and some towers with domes that keep statues inside. It looks a special decoration, very nice but not overloaded and is painted white combined with gold and crimson details, like the whole temple.

Diapositiva11.PNG

The left lateral nave has scaffolding, a sign that repair work is being done, but at that time the workers were no longer present. At the end of the lateral naves there are carved wooden altars with images of their saints.

Diapositiva28.PNG

The right aisle was free of scaffolding and a doorway can be seen serving as a side entrance or exit.

Diapositiva30.PNG

There are many details such as arched windows with rosettes, well aligned carved wooden pews, doors, pictures with paintings hanging on the walls and other accessories that are part of the decoration of Catholic temples and are mostly made of wood.

This is another area under repair, I believe they are doing maintenance repairs and I imagine it is touching up the paint.

Diapositiva31.PNG

Everywhere I walked in, everything was very beautiful. The walls were very ornate. The round and smooth columns, decorated with their capitals and sturdy bases, painted in that reddish color with gold that stands out with the white. The striking colors are like those of the exterior of the temple.

The floor of the central hallway is a mosaic of yellow, white, red and green tiles. They look worn and despite the weather they are still resistant.

The floor in the lateral naves is made of a tile that resembles gray granite combined with colored figures.

I'm on my way out and night has fallen, I remembered the blue hour for some photos.

Diapositiva42.PNG

Doors with ancient design always impress me, because they are big and robust. I leave the temple and the doors were already closing. I continue to admire the beauty of the neo-Byzantine structure that surrounds the doors without losing the detail of the figure of a homeless man sleeping at one of the entrances of the Christian temple.

Diapositiva43.PNG

Diapositiva47.PNG

As a last attempt to achieve blue hour photos I take two shots with my iPhone. But I need more practice.

Diapositiva49.PNG

I will continue practicing on these photos but I did manage to enter the interior of the church Nuestra Señora de los Dolores. I have said before that I really like the architecture of the temples but what I don't like is to go inside because of the statues they have. I hope you enjoyed the structure and the interior decoration of the temple. See you soon. Bye bye.

Chao, chao.

I agree with you, the church is absolutely beautiful. I love churches, and so many beautiful details that they always have inside. I really liked the gesture of donating on the 10% to @aplusd account, I think I'm going to follow your example. They really do very good work in this community.

Cheers

Glad you like it, this church is majestic on the inside and also on the outside. Hopefully you have seen it on the outside. I have a lot of time making a contribution to the community is the way to give back, because we should not only expect to receive from the communities in hive we also have to give to help continue doing the work. I have not removed that paragraph at the end of my posts because it is a way for other hivers to be encouraged like you :D Cheers. A hug!
