This is one of the most famous bazaars of Izmir and the longest in the world. In fact, Kemeralti Bazaar, which is a bazaar where historical and modern buildings coexist, covers almost a neighborhood. Frankly, a few years ago, I was afraid to get lost while visiting Kemeraltı. Because this bazaar contains maybe dozens of streets. Kemeralti Bazaar hosts thousands of visitors during the day. Local and global brands also have a place here. After all, the shopping heart of Izmir beats here. As far as I know, it was added to the Tentative World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2020. Now let's take a look at the crowds and the streets with photos.
Burası İzmir'in en ünlü, dünyanın en uzun çarşılarından biridir. Öyle ki tarihi ve modern yapıların bir arada bulunduğu bir çarşı olan Kemeraltı Çarşısı neredeyse bir mahalleyi kapsıyor. Açıkçası birkaç yıl önce Kemeraltı'nı gezerken kaybolmak korkmuştum. Çünkü bu çarşı, belki de onlarca sokağı içinde bulunduruyor. Kemeraltı Çarşısı, gün içinde binlerce ziyaretçiye ev sahipliği yapıyor. Yerel ve global markalar da burada yer edinmiş durumda. Neticede İzmir'in alışveriş kalbi burada atıyor. Bildiğim kadarıyla da 2020 yılında UNESCO tarafından Dünya Mirası Geçici Listesi'ne eklendi. Şimdi gelin birlikte kalabalıklara ve sokaklara fotoğraflarla birlikte göz atalım.
Although I find Kemeralti Bazaar very crowded, I still like its liveliness. Since I was here towards evening, most shops were about to close. And people had done their shopping and were on their way home. Because of this, some streets were empty. I think I like the empty state of some streets. It was nice to shoot the streets when there were no people. It was priceless to feel the historical texture of the streets, which have been intertwined with history since the 1600s.
Kemeraltı Çarşısı'nı çok kalabalık bulmama rağmen yine de canlılığını seviyorum. Ben burada akşama doğru bulunduğumdan çoğu dükkan kapanmak üzereydi. Ve insanlar alışverişlerini yapmış, eve doğru yol alıyordu. Bu nedenle bazı sokakları boştu. Sanırım bazı sokakların boş hali hoşuma gitti. Sokakları bir de insanlar yokken çekmek güzeldi. 1600'lü yıllardan bu yana tarihle iç içe geçmiş sokakların tarihi dokusunu hissetmek paha biçilemezdi.
Almost every street in Kemeraltı leads to a mosque. However, perhaps the most special of these mosques is the Kemeraltı Mosque. This historical mosque, built in the 1600s, is also known as Yusuf Çavuşzade Ahmet Ağa Mosque. The mosque has a single dome, a single minaret and a cubic structure. If you enter the Kemeraltı Bazaar from Konak Atatürk Square and proceed, the first mosque you will see is the Kemeraltı Mosque.
Kemeraltı'nda neredeyse her sokak bir camiye çıkıyor. Ancak bu camilerden belki de en özeli Kemeraltı Camii'dir. 1600'lü yıllarda yapılan bu tarihi camii, Yusuf Çavuşzade Ahmet Ağa Camii olarak da biliniyor. Camii, tek kubbeli, tek minareli ve kübik bir yapıya sahiptir. Konak Atatürk Meydanı'ndan Kemeraltı Çarşısı'na girip ilerlerseniz ilk göreceğiniz camii Kemeraltı Camii'dir.
Carpets and carpet sellers were attracting great attention in Kemeraltı Bazaar, as in other bazaars where trade was intense. I love that there are carpet sellers in such historical places. Carpets, especially antique rugs, add a different atmosphere to historical places.
Ticaretin yoğun bir şekilde ilerlediği diğer çarşılarda olduğu gibi Kemeraltı Çarşısı'nda da halılar ve halı satıcıları büyük ilgi görüyordu. Ben böyle tarihi mekanlarda halı satıcılarının bulunmasını çok seviyorum. Halılar, özellikle antika halılar tarihi yerlere ayrı bir hava katıyor.
Haci Salih Pasa Sadirvan is located in Haci Salih Pasa Square. This fountain, which has a domed and majestic structure, attracted my attention. I loved the size of its dome standing on eight pillars. Şadırvans are generally called domed structures with fountains around them. According to the information sign of this fountain, this fountain was built by Ahmet Reşit Efendi in the name of Hacı Salih Pasha, one of the viziers of the Ottoman Empire, in 1828. Later, this fountain, which was affected by major earthquakes, was destroyed by the II. Abdulhamid Han had it repaired. I also loved the construction inscription on the information sign.
Hacı Salih Paşa Şadırvanı, Hacı Salih Paşa Meydanı'nda bulunur. Kubbeli ve heybetli bir yapıya sahip bu şadırvan, oldukça ilgimi çekti. Sekiz sütun üzerinde duran kubbesinin büyüklüğüne bayıldım. Şadırvanlar genelde çevresinde çeşme bulunan kubbeli yapılara deniliyor. Bu şadırvanın bilgi tabelasında yer aldığına göre, bu şadırvan Osmanlı İmparatorluğu vezirlerinden Hacı Salih Paşa adına Ahmet Reşit Efendi tarafından 1828 yılında yapılmıştır. Daha sonra büyük depremlerden etkilenen bu şadırvanı II. Abdülhamid Han onarmıştır. Bilgi tabelasında yer alan inşa kitabesini de çok sevdim.
I loved these historical streets and historical buildings. I came across a historical inn in almost every street I took my step. Some historical houses were repaired and modernized. However, I could still smell the history inside the renovated houses. I think that people who lived centuries ago came here to shop. Shopkeepers were waiting for their customers on the streets I visited. Until today, only the dates and signs on these streets have changed. These streets, which are the heart of the economy and shopping, are now preferred by tourists both for shopping and historical places.
Bu tarihi sokaklara ve tarihi yapılara bayıldım. Adımımı attığım hemen her sokakta bir tarihi hana rastlıyordum. Bazı tarihi evler onarılıp modern hale getirilmişti. Ancak yine de yenilenen evlerin içinde tarih kokusunu alabiliyordum. Düşünüyorum da bundan yüzyıllar öncesinde yaşamış insanlar buraya gelip alışveriş yapıyordu. Benim gezdiğim sokaklarda esnaflar müşterilerini bekliyordu. Bugüne kadar bu sokaklarda sadece tarih ve tabelalar değişti. Ekonominin ve alışveriş kalbi olan bu sokaklar, şimdilerde hem alışveriş için hem de tarihi yerler için turistler tarafından tercih ediliyor.
After all, I can say that I witnessed history while walking these streets. If you happen to be in Izmir one day, I recommend you to visit Kemeraltı Bazaar. There are cafes, restaurants, all kinds of places where you can shop and historical buildings in this bazaar. I've been to the Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) in Istanbul years ago, and it was one of the most unforgettable experiences I had in Turkey. On other hand, I've never been to İzmir. But with the existence of Kemeralti Bazaar in that location, as the longest marketplace in the world, I've bookmarked that ancient site for my next visit. With its historic architecture, I'm truly amazed at its design influences and the resulting cultural diversity it has offered to that region.

Every street has a different history. The structures and stones look very beautiful. As you said, we can say that it is the shopping heart of Izmir. The stories of historical buildings also intrigued me. You explained it very well.
