Tuqueque's Shadow - SMASh Contest #202

in Shadow Hunters2 years ago

Today, I was sitting on the edge of a planter waiting outside my dentist's office when this little gecko and his shadow appeared next to me.

In Venezuela, we call this house gecko "tuqueques" or "limpia casa" (clean house). They are typical of warm zones, and here they are pretty common.

They are totally harmless and characterized by emitting a squeak that they do to mark territory or court females, from what I have read.

There are usually a lot of them in my house; they usually feed on insects, but they also love some fruits. They don't spare the bananas in my kitchen if there are any very ripe ones.

As soon as it became aware of my presence, this one quickly hid among the bushes.

This is my entry to Shadow Hunters SMASh Contest - Round 202.

Thank you very much for reading.

Oh I loved the geckos back home in South Africa...not when they fell off the ceiling onto your bed while you were sleeping of course🤣🤣🤣 yup that has happened. Nothing like a clumsy gecko to get one's heart rate lifted in the dead of night!!! But yes, we had a few in our home and they kept the other insects at bay. In SA it's a case of live and let live. Looks like this was almost midday when this was taken? They love the warm rocks. How hot was it there today?

Good thing I've never had one fall on my bed, 🤣 I like to have them in the house to avoid unwanted crawling insects. The photo was taken in the morning at about 9:30, but here the mornings at this time of the year are usually very sunny, and yes, it was hot. Thank you very much for stopping by 😊

hehe well then you are very lucky lol. I almost jumped out of my skin when one landed next to my face on the pillow one night🤣🤣🤣

Oh gosh, I would have shrieked with fright and woke up the whole neighborhood 😂. I don't mind having them around, but I don't like to touch them, and the thought of one on my face gives me heebie jeebies, hehe

Well, it made me think.... they probably have landed on my head before in my sleep...(she shivers and shakes haha). Absolute heebie jeebies lol

We call it tiki in our dialect, sounds like teque. I wonder if we got its name from your language 😅

Hehe, for me, Tiki is those half-humanoid figures carved in wood that I think are Polynesian. in the Caribbean islands, they love to use them in decorations of some bars, and there are many Tiki Bars ;)

I always made sure I had plenty of geckos in my house when living in warm countries, they sure ate the mossies :)

I can imagine Eddie W. catching geckos to bring them home, lol. Mossies hum, a new word to me to say mosquitoes. :)

Yes those pesky mossies, we learn something new every day, and hmmm the beans are smelling awesome, I need to sleep though haha, have a good one EliCat ;)

I'm sure those beans are delicious, Ed! Enjoy them and have a great day:)

Thanks Eli, am about to eat my first bowl now 😉

Gecko is too cute, amiga hehe.
