¡Hola, amigos Hivers! Hoy les traigo el resumen y una review de lo que considero uno de los mejores libros que he leído, una obra preciosa que nos deja una valiosa lección de tolerancia, se trata de «El Niño con el Pijama de Rayas», una obra escrita por el autor irlandés John Boyne.

La historia nos habla de Bruno, un niño de ocho años que vive en Berlín con su familia, en una casa muy grande, de cinco pisos, en donde puede jugar a sus anchas con sus tres «Mejores Amigos Para Toda la Vida» (como él los llama) Karl, Daniel y Martin.
The story tells us about Bruno, an eight-year-old boy who lives in Berlin with his family, in a very large, five-story house, where he can play freely with his three «Best Friends for Life» (as he calls them) Karl, Daniel and Martin.
Tiene una hermana de doce años llamada Gretel que, según él, está loca de remate. La niña lo molesta llamándolo «estúpido» todo el tiempo, a pesar de la prohibición de su madre.
He has a twelve-year-old sister named Gretel who, according to him, is absolutely crazy. The girl annoys him by calling him "stupid" all the time, despite her mother's prohibition.

From that visit, the life of the whole family changes. because Bruno's father receives the position of Commander of one of the most important concentration and extermination camps of the third Raich, it's about Auschwitz, located in Poland.

When they arrive at Auschwitz, Bruno is disappointed because his new house is smaller than the previous one, and there are no friends to play with, and it's almost always full of soldiers, but one of them is the one that Bruno hates the most, in fact he is afraid of him because of his imposing personality and because he is rude to the servants, as well as violent, since one day he shot a dog just because he was barking, this is Lieutenant Kotler.
En su desesperación por conseguir algo de diversión, Bruno le pide un neumático al teniente Kotler, quien le ordena a Pavel (el camarero de la casa) que consiga uno. Desperate for some fun, Bruno asks Lieutenant Kotler for a tire, who orders Pavel (the house waiter) to get one. Bruno builds a swing with the tire, but he falls down and hurts his leg, later Pavel heals the wound and assures him that it's not serious, but Bruno doesn't believe him because apparently Pavel is only a servant, but the man tells him he assures that he really is a doctor, or at least he once was.

From his innocence, he cannot understand why those people are there and why the screaming soldiers don't let them pass to the other side of the fence, if they did it, then he could play with any of those children.

Bruno se acerca a ese niño y ambos comienzan a hablar, descubriendo cosas todavía más interesantes, como por ejemplo el hecho de que ambos tienen la misma edad y que nacieron el mismo día. Bruno approaches that child and they both begin to talk, discovering even more interesting things, such as the fact that they are both the same age and that they were born on the same day. Los niños se ven allí casi todos los días, entablan una hermosa amistad y Bruno le lleva un poco de comida a Shmuel porque su amigo está hambriento, de hecho su apariencia es flaca, pálida y demacrada. The children see each other there almost every day, they strike up a beautiful friendship and Bruno brings some food to Shmuel because his friend is hungry, in fact his appearance is thin, pale and emaciated. They both talk about their life before arriving there: Bruno tells him what his life was like in Berlin, and Shmuel tells him that he used to live with his parents and that he was very happy until the soldiers broke into the home, they asked them to takes their stuff, so they had to go to another place with other families, where there was a child who beat him. That place was probably some getto, but Shmuel didn't know.

On one occasion, Bruno gets a huge surprise when he discovers that his bald little friend, dressed in striped pajamas, is there at his house. Lieutenant Kotler had brought Shmuel to clean the glasses (they needed someone with small hands for that job)

Later the soldier is transferred to another place, Bruno's mother begins to drink a lot of "medicinal" liquor and to top it all, both Bruno and Gretel are affected by a lice epidemic, therefore, Bruno's father shaves his head, rendering him bald, and orders Gretel to have a medicinal solution put on her scalp. Also, influenced by his wife, he makes the decision that his family should return to Berlin because Auschwitz doesn't seem to be the best place to raise children.
Bruno está muy decepcionado, no solo porque ahora está calvo, (en la versión literaria porque en la versión cinematográfica, el personaje conserva su cabello) sino porque ahora no quiere regresar a Berlín, allí, en Polonia, tiene un nuevo amigo y no quiere dejarlo.
Bruno is very disappointed, not only because now he is bald, (in the literary version because in the film version, the character keeps his hair) but because now he doesn't want to return to Berlin, there, in Poland he has a new friend and he doesn't want to leave him .
Bruno fue a ver a Shmuel por última vez y le dice que lamentablemente tiene que regresar a Berlín, pero se niega a dejar de verlo, por eso lo invita a ir a su casa a pasar vacaciones. Shmuel acepta, pero está muy preocupado porque no puede encontrar a su padre, quien se fue a trabajar hace algunos días y no ha regresado. Bruno intenta tranquilizarlo, diciéndole que tal vez aún no ha terminado el trabajo y por eso no ha vuelto, de todos modos le ofrece su ayuda a Shmuel para buscar a su padre al día siguiente y además, aprovecharían la ocasión para poder jugar, ya que por más que habían hablado antes, nunca habían jugado juntos, en el mismo lado de la cerca.
Bruno went to see Shmuel for the last time and tells him that unfortunately he has to return to Berlin, but he refuses to stop seeing him, so he invites him to go to his house for a vacation. Shmuel accepts, but is very worried because he cannot find his father, who went to work a few days ago and has not returned. Bruno tries to reassure him, telling him that perhaps he has not finished the work yet and that is why he has not returned, anyway he offers his help to Shmuel to look for his father the next day and also, they would take the opportunity to be able to play, since as much as they had talked before, they had never played together, on the same side of the fence.
Shmuel acepta, lleno de entusiasmo y se compromete a conseguir un piyama de rayas, igual a los que todos usan al otro lado de la cerca, para que nadie pueda reconocer a Bruno y lo devuelvan a su casa. Bruno está lleno de emoción por la nueva aventura que además, implica un disfraz, así que regresa a su casa, lleno de expectativas.
Shmuel enthusiastically accepts and agrees to get a striped pajamas, just like the ones everyone wears on the other side of the fence, so that no one can recognize Bruno and return him to his home. Bruno is full of excitement for the new adventure that also involves a costume, so he returns home, full of expectations.
Al día siguiente, luego de una fuerte lluvia, Bruno va al encuentro de su amigo, tal y como acordaron, Shmuel le entrega el piyama de rayas que habían encontrado y después que Bruno se lo pone, pasa al otro lado de la cerca (por debajo de ella). Por alguna razón, ambos sienten fuertes deseos de abrazarse, pero no lo hacen, simplemente se quedan allí, contemplándose el uno al otro por primera vez, en igualdad de condiciones.
The next day, after a heavy rain, Bruno goes to meet his friend, as agreed, Shmuel gave him the striped pajamas he had found and after Bruno wears it on, he goes to the other side of the fence (he passed under it). For some reason, they felt the need to hug, but they don't do it, they just stand there, staring at each other for the first time on equal terms.

Review
El libro está narrado en tercera persona y desde el punto de vista de un niño de ocho años, por lo tanto la lectura resulta bastante dinámica y sencilla para los niños de esa edad que estuvieran interesados en leerlo, además, a pesar de que es un libro que trata un tema tan fuerte como el holocausto, carece de descripciones explícitas acerca del maltrato que reciben los prisioneros en Auchswitz, de hecho, el autor ni siquiera menciona que los niños terminan en una cámara de gas, sino que el lector adulto lo deduce por obvias razones, lo que a su vez también permite que el libro sea bastante apto para niños.
The book is narrated in the third person and from the point of view of an eight-year-old child, therefore the reading is quite dynamic and simple for children of that age who are interested in reading it, in addition, despite the fact that it's a a book that deals with a topic as strong as the holocaust, lacks explicit descriptions about the mistreatment of prisoners at Auchswitz, in fact, the author doesn't even mention that children end up in a gas chamber, but the adult author deduces it for obvious reasons, which in turn also makes the book quite kid-friendly.
Como lectora me encantó el libro, aunque encontré ciertos errores que quizá no son relevantes dentro de la historia, pero hubiera sido mejor que el autor los hubiera corregido, como por ejemplo el hecho de la estatura de Hitler. En un episodio, John Boyne describe al «Führer» como más bajito que Eva, cuando en realidad era todo lo contrario, Hitler era más alto que Eva Braun.
As a reader I loved the book, although I found certain errors that may not be relevant to the story, but it would have been better if the author had corrected them, such as the fact of Hitler's height. In one chapter , John Boyne describes the "Führer" as shorter than Eva, when in fact it was the opposite, Hitler was taller than Eva Braun.
El libro menciona que los postes que sostienen los alambres de púas que forman las cercas de Auschwitz, están hechos de madera, pero en realidad están hechos de concreto.
The book mentions that the posts that support the barbed wires that make up the Auschwitz fences are made of wood, but they are actually made of concrete.
Y finalmente, el otro detalle que encontré en el libro es que Boyne nunca mencionó que los soldados nazis les ordenaron a los prisioneros que entraron en la cámara, quitarse la ropa, cuando este hecho era fundamental en el proceso porque cumplía dos funciones, la primera era hacerles creer a los prisioneros que tomarían una ducha y por lo tanto evitaban que entraran en pánico, y la segunda, era impedir que usaran la tela como filtro cuando el gas comenzara a salir desde la escotilla superior.
And finally, the other detail that I found in the book is that Boyne never mentioned that the Nazi soldiers ordered the prisoners who entered the chamber to take off their clothes, when this fact was fundamental in the process because it served two functions, the first one, it was to make the prisoners believe that they would take a shower and thus prevent them from panicking, and the second one was to prevent them from using the cloth as a filter when the gas began to come out from the upper hatch.
En la versión cinematográfica no pasaron por alto este detalle, sin embargo omitieron el hecho de que Bruno también estaba calvo y por lo tanto, le era más fácil confundirse entre los prisioneros.
In the film version they didn't overlook this detail, however they omitted the fact that Bruno was also bald and therefore it was easier for him to be confused among the prisoners.
De todos modos y a pesar de los errores, El niño con el Piyama de Rayas es un forma hermosa de demostrar la tolerancia, el respeto y el cariño incondicional que solo los niños pueden mostrar a través de su inocencia. Bruno ni siquiera sabía lo que significaba ser judío, ni porqué estaban al otro lado de la alambrada, él solo quería ser amigo de Shmuel, lo apreciaba sin importarle su procedencia y le encantaba pasar tiempo junto a él.
Regardless and despite the mistakes, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a beautiful way to demonstrate the tolerance, respect and unconditional affection that only children can show through their innocence. Bruno didn't even know what it meant to be Jewish, or why they were on the other side of the fence, he just wanted to be friends with Shmuel, he appreciated him regardless of where he came from and he loved spending time with him.
Bruno era muy pequeño para darse cuenta de los detalles que ocurrían a su alrededor, pero ya desde su edad mostraba un carácter más similar al de su abuela paterna (quien odiaba el nazismo) él detestaba la forma en que el teniente Kotler se dirigía a los demás y le parecía injusta la existencia de esa cerca lo mantenía aislado de su amigo judío.
Bruno was too young to be aware of the details that occurred around him, but from his age he showed a character more similar to that of his paternal grandmother (who hated Nazism) he detested the way Lieutenant Kotler treated others , and it seemed unfair to him, the existence of that fence kept him isolated from his Jewish friend.
Si eres un niño, al leer el libro descubrirás que no existen barreras para la amistad, pero si eres adulto, tu descubrimiento se hace más profundo, pues te das cuenta de cosas que Bruno ignora por completo, como el fugaz romance que tiene su madre con el teniente Kotler, el verdadero propósito del campo de concentración, y lo que sucede finalmente con Pavel (que es asesinado por Kotler)
If you are a child, when you read the book you will discover that there are no barriers to friendship, but if you are an adult, your discovery deepens, as you realize things that Bruno ignores completely, such as the fleeting romance that his mother has with Lieutenant Kotler, the true purpose of the concentration camp, and what ultimately happens to Pavel (who is killed by Kotler)
Pero lo más importante es que nos damos cuenta de lo que realmente termina sucediendo con Bruno y Shmuel dentro de ese «lugar cerrado». El padre de Bruno experimenta en carne propia, el dolor que él mismo ha proporcionado a tantos judíos a través de sus órdenes, pierde a su hijo en el mismo lugar en el que él ha metido a tantas personas que ni siquiera consideraba humanas, y queda tan devastado al descubrir lo que sucedió (después de encontrar la ropa de Bruno en la cerca) que ni siquiera le importa cuando unos soldados se lo llevan (probablemente los rusos que liberaron el campo de concentración en enero de 1945)
But the most important thing is that we realize what really ends up happening with Bruno and Shmuel inside that "closed place." Bruno's father experiences firsthand the pain that he has brought to so many Jews through his orders, loses his son in the same place where he has put so many people that he didn't even consider human, and remains so devastated to find out what happened (after finding Bruno's clothes on the fence) that he doesn't even care when some soldiers take him away (probably the Russians who liberated the concentration camp in January 1945)
En conclusión, amigos, este libro es una joya que deberían leer porque está llena de sentimiento y lecciones de vida.

Gracias por presentarnos la historia, bastante detallada, de esa novela que dio lugar al filme homónimo. El libro no lo he leído, mas sí vi el filme, y me impactó mucho en el momento que lo conocí. Por lo leído, no pareciera haber mayor diferencia entre la historia novelada y su versión fílmica.
Voy a disentir de ti en que sea un libro apto para niños; en todo caso para jóvenes,; estimo que es una historia un poco dura para un niño. Saludos, @mairene1.

Sí, bueno, la verdad es que yo sé que hay quienes opinan que sería un libro muy fuerte para un niño, yo en cambio no lo consigo gráfico en absoluto, considero que la película lo es más (por obvias razones, ya que se trata de un audiovisual) además, en cualquier caso creo es bueno que los niños conozcan la historia desde pequeños.
