Like all of John Grisham's novels in what came to be called the legal thriller, the plot of his books revolves around law firms that charge monstrously high fees for their legal services, with principles that are often at odds with morality and good manners.
And who obviously represent multinationals that bill billions of dollars a year.
The Partner does not stray from this theme, although its plot is not as directly linked to the world of lawyers as other books, but to the personal relationship between two of them.
This situation of earning large sums of money without any control by the banks does not guarantee a happy ending for the protagonist in The Partner, mainly due to his own mistakes.
The story opens with news of the death of a member of a prestigious law firm in a car accident.
Apparently the car went out of control on a bend, hit a tree and fell into a ravine and caught fire.
The charred remains of the driver have not been identified but are presumed to be those of Patrick Lanigan.
The insurance company has compensated the wife, now a widow, who immediately found comfort in a lover.
Meanwhile in Brazil, a group of private detectives, after several years of searching, manage to identify and kidnap Danilo Silva, who turns out to be Patrick Lanigan, who had staged his death by deceiving everyone. And who had foreseen absolutely everything. Even his own arrest, kidnapping and transfer to the USA.
In this case, an alarm inside the house he lived in would have sounded at the home of Eva Miranda (his mistress, with whom he shared his secret, as well as being a lawyer in his native country) in Sao Paulo, who had precise instructions to follow from that moment onwards.
The whole story revolves around three axes: a colossal fraud against the US government, a plot hatched by the top partners of the buffet for which Lanigan worked and of which he had become aware by mere coincidence, and ninety million dollars that have disappeared.
Lanigan is arrested, taken to a military prison in Puerto Rico, interrogated and when the government realises the huge scandal that could be unleashed if the truth is known, it decides to negotiate with Lanigan if he returns the money. From which he has already extracted a considerable amount of interest.
What Lanigan didn't know is that partners are sometimes more skilful than the real bosses.
And so when, after having negotiated with the government for the return of the money in exchange for immunity, he decides to meet his beloved in Switzerland, an unpleasant surprise awaits him. There is no one to wait for him.
A novel full of suspense and twists, in which the ingenuity of a person who tries to give a new rhythm to his life, far from the daily pressures of his profession, suddenly becomes the architect of a plot in which danger, strategy, love and friendship are intertwined, love and friendship intertwine in the best John Grisham style in an uninterrupted succession of escapes, discoveries, blackmail, bribes and confessions, with the mafia in between, that will accompany the reader until the final dissipation of all the shadows over the story of Patrick Lanigan and Danilo Silva.
Como toda las novelas de John Grisham enmarcadas dentro de lo que se dio en llamar el legal thriller, la trama de sus libros gira alrededor de estudios de abogados que cobran cifran monstruosas por sus servicios legales, con principios que muchas veces está reñidos con la moral y las buenas costumbres.
Y que representan obviamente a multinaciones que facturan miles de millones de dólares al año.
El Socio no se aparta de esta temática aunque su trama no está tan directamente vinculada al mundo de los abogados como otros libros sino a la relación personal entre dos de ellos.
Esta situación de ganar amplias sumas de dinero sin ningún control por parte de las entidades bancarias no garantiza en El Socio a su protagonista un final feliz, debido principalmente a sus propios errores.
La historia inicia con la noticia de la muerte de un integrante de un prestigioso buffet de abogados en un accidente de auto.
Aparentemente el auto se descontroló en una curva, golpeó contra un árbol y cayó en un barranco incendiándose.
Los restos carbonizados del conductor no han hecho posible su identificación pero se presume que sean de Patrick Lanigan.
La compañia de seguros ha indemnizado la esposa, ahora viuda, que ha encontrado en seguida conforto en un amante.
Mientras tanto en Brasil, un grupo de detectives privados luego de varios años de búsqueda, logran individualizar y secuestrar a Danilo Silva, que resulta ser Patrick Lanigan quien había fraguado su muerte engañando a todo el mundo. Y que había previsto absolutamente todo. Incluso su propia detención, secuestro y traslado a los EE. UU.
En este caso, una alarma en el interior de la casa que habitaba habría sonado en el domicilio de Eva Miranda, (amante y con la cuál condividía su secreto, además de ser también un abogada en su país natal) en San Pablo la cuál tenía precisas instrucciones a seguir a partir de ese momento.
Toda la historia se desarrolla alrededor de tres ejes: un fraude colosal contra el gobierno de los EE. UU., una trama urdida por los socios más altos del buffet para el que trabajaba Lanigan y de la cuél él había tenido conocimiento por simple coincidencia y noventa millones de dólares que han desaparecido.
Lanigan es detenido, llevado a una cércel militar en Puerto Rico, interrogado y cuando el gobierno se da cuenta del escándalo mayúsculo que se puede desatar si se conoce la verdad decide de negociar con Lanigan si éste restituye el dinero. Al cuál ya le ha sacado una considerable cantidad de intereses.
Lo que Lanigan no sabía es que los socios a veces más hábiles que los verdaderos patrones.
Y así cuando después de haber negociado con el gobierno la devolución del dinero en cambio de la inmunidad decide de reunirse con su amada en Suiza, una desagradable sorpresa lo espera. No hay nadie a esperarlo.
Una novela llena de suspenso y giros, en el que el ingenio de una persona que trata de imprimir un nuevo ritmo a su vida lejos de las presiones cotidianas a que se profesión lo somete, se transforma de repente en el artífice de una trama en la que el peligro, la estrategia, el amor y la amistad se entrelazan en el mejor estilo de John Grisham en una sucesión ininterrumpida de huidas, hallazgos, chantajes, sobornos y confesiones, mafia de por medio, que acompañarán al lector hasta la disipación final de todas las sombras sobre la historia de Patrick Lanigan y Danilo Silva.
