Greetings to those who love books and reading. A few days ago I found this book on a shelf in the bookstore of my small city and I took it, ready to buy it even without knowing its price. It was even more pleasant to see that its value did not exceed 100 pesos in our currency.
I want to introduce you to Virgilio Piñera Llera (1912-1979), Cuban narrator, poet, and playwright. Virgilio Piñera is a capital figure of Cuban letters, he developed his work at the crossroads of a turbulent island. His narrative and theater, imbued with an existential anguish and black humor, explore the vulnerability of the body and the absurdity of the human condition under incomprensibles systems.
Witness to revolutions and social changes, Piñera wrote from the edge of paradox. His native Cuba was both muse and executioner. Although he initially supported the Revolution, his aesthetic and sexual dissent relegated him to a bitter internal exile. He was also a Doctor of Philosophy and Letters and this detail marks the depth of his thought. His intellectuality and his identity became targets of a systematic persecution that sought to annul all dissent and diversity during the so-called Quinquenio Gris.
Works like La carne de René lay bare the rawness of existence, standing as a lucid and torn testimony of the individual's struggle to breathe in a social context that suffocates all singularity.
Today I bring you Cuentos completos, composed of seventy-six stories from different stages. His work has always seemed somewhat premonitory to me and that's why I wanted to start the reading with a sandalwood incense because I believe it will take me to unsuspected sensations, I knew it from the moment I opened the book and read the first lines.
In Cuentos Completos, Virgilio Piñera weaves a universe where the everyday fractures to reveal its nightmare core, as @marabuzal would say, here there is a brutal surrealism. His surrealism is not escapist, it works for him as a distorting lens that magnifies the crudeness of existence. The flesh, social rituals, and the body itself become scenarios of a metaphysical anxiety, where the real and the absurd merge into the same torn truth.
This oneiric and oppressive atmosphere is not a mere aesthetic exercise, but the expression of a besieged subjectivity, which uses controlled delirium to dissect the tensions of Cuban history and the human condition under any tyranny.
La caída is the first story in this compilation as part of Cuentos fríos. What a way of narrating! It seems as if the narrator is looking from above like a soul separated from the body.
Even with his body dismembered, he keeps narrating and there is a phrase that sends shivers down our spine: but it is nothing compared to what came after. What mastery to bring the social context from individuality.
I like short stories, I find it very difficult to leave a novel marked with a bookmark while the story eats away at me, the characters call out to me loudly while I do my daily chores.
Reading Virgilio Piñera I enjoy how time flies. In El viaje he presents us with more than a surrealist picture, just as he says in his story, as a code to understand this journey is a revelation, it can only be a dream or an astral journey where hundreds of nannies take turns pushing the stroller, one kilometer each. It seems like an absurd story, nothing is absurd when the mind says it is because experiences precede the future.
I haven't finished reading yet, I can comment later on other longer stories. The work of Virgilio Piñera is phenomenal, I recommend you read La isla en peso so well known for its verses and the transgressive dramaturgy of Electra Garrigó. His work, carved in paradox and black humor, is a mirror for our present.

Un saludo a los que aman los libros y la lectura. Hace unos días encontré este libro en un estante de la librería de mi pequeña ciudad y lo tomé dispuesta a comprarlo aún sin saber su precio. Fue más grato ver que su valor no superaba los 100 pesos en nuestra moneda.
Quiero acercarlos a Virgilio Piñera Llera (1912-1979), narrador, poeta, y dramaturgo cubano. Virgilio Piñera, es una figura capital de las letras cubanas, desarrolló su obra en la encrucijada de una isla convulsa. Su narrativa y teatro, impregnados de una angustia existencial y un humor negro, exploran la vulnerabilidad del cuerpo y el absurdo de la condición humana bajo sistemas incomprescincibles.
Testigo de revoluciones y cambios sociales, Piñera escribió desde el filo de la paradoja. Su Cuba natal fue a la vez musa y verdugo. Aunque apoyó inicialmente la Revolución, su disidencia estética y sexual lo relegó a un amargo exilio interior. Fue además Doctor en Filosofía y Letras y este detalle marca la profundidad de su pensamiento. Su intelectualidad y su identidad se convirtieron en blancos de una persecución sistemática que buscaba anular toda disidencia y diversidad en el llamado Quinquenio Gris
Obras como La carne de René desnudan la crudeza de la existencia, erigiéndose como un testimonio lúcido y desgarrado de la lucha del individuo por respirar en un contexto social que sofoca toda singularidad.
Hoy les traigo Cuentos completos, compuesto por setenta y seis cuentos, de diferentes etapas. Su obra siempre me ha parecido algo premonitoria y por ello quise comenzar la lectura con un incienso de sándalo porque creo que me llevarà a sensaciones insospechadas, lo supe desde que abrí el libro y leí las primeras lineas.
En Cuentos Completos, Virgilio Piñera teje un universo donde lo cotidiano se fractura para revelar su núcleo de pesadilla, como diría @marabuzal, aquí hay un surrealismo brutal. Su surrealismo no es evasionista, le funciona como lente deformante que magnifica la crudeza de la existencia. La carne, los rituales sociales y el cuerpo mismo se convierten en escenarios de una ansiedad metafísica, donde lo real y lo absurdo se funden en una misma verdad desgarrada.
Este ambiente onírico y opresivo no es un mero ejercicio estético, sino la expresión de una subjetividad sitiada, que utiliza el delirio controlado para diseccionar las tensiones de la historia cubana y la condición humana bajo cualquier tiranía.
La caída es el primer cuento de esta compilación como parte de Cuentos fríos. ¡Que manera de narrar!, tal pareciera que quien lo hace, mira desde arriba como un alma separada del cuerpo.
Aún con el cuerpo desmembrado, él sigue relatando y hay una frase que nos eriza la piel pero no es nada en comparación con lo que vino después. Que maestría para llevar a el contexto social desde la individualidad.
Me gustan los cuentos cortos, me es muy difícil dejar una novela marcada en una hoja tal mientras me carcome la historia, los personajes me llaman a voces mientras hago los deberes del día.
Leyendo a Virgilio Piñera disfruto como se va el tiempo. En El viaje nos presenta más que un cuadro surrealista, tal como dice en su cuento, como código para entender este viaje es una revelación, no puede ser más que un sueño o un viaje astral donde cientos de niñeras se turnan para empujar el cochecito, un kilómetro cada una. Parece un relato absurdo, nada es absurdo cuando la mente dice es porque las vivencias preceden el futuro.
Aún no termino la lectura, podré comentarle más adelante otros cuentos más extensos. La obra de Virgilio Piñera es fenomenal, les recomiendo leer La isla en peso tan conocida por sus versos y la dramaturgia transgresora de Electra Garrigó. Su obra tallada en la paradoja y el humor negro, es un espejo para nuestro presente.

Me recuerdas el poema de Flora y sus grandes pies, siempre Virgilio con su humor pero con una tenaz mirada a nuestra identidad, nuestra existencia, un intelectual enorme.

Esa "verdad desgarrada" a la que llegas es la conclusión inevitable. Para Virgilio, lo absurdo no es lo opuesto a lo real; es su núcleo. Y solo desgarrando la superficie de lo cotidiano podemos vislumbrar, aunque sea por un instante aterrador, esa verdad. Un surrealismo brutal, en efecto. No hay mejor definición, él,
no nos muestra el miedo a la muerte o al dolor, sino el terror fundamental a existir en un cuerpo que se corrompe, dentro de unos rituales sociales que son, en sí mismos, actos de canibalismo o violencia soterrada.
Tu lectura capta la esencia más poderosa y perturbadora de la escritura de Virgilio, como cubano, como nosotros, con la maldita circunstancia del agua por todas partes!
