"The Right Thing" is very subjective. Depending on what the current weighing of values in a community are, the "right thing" can differ quite a lot. I personally don't see things as black and white, and dark in this case. I prefer the metaphor of a pendulum. We had a phase of extreme isolationist/nationalist movements, leading to two world wars. Then we had a phase of extreme globalist movements, leading to a huge load of suffering as well as everyone tried to impose their weighing of values onto other cultures all around the globe, while still trying to take as much for themselves as possible.

That bubble, too, burst now. I'm not a fan of Trump or their way to isolate the US, nor the way they do politics right now - but the other extreme, the backdoor-politics and lobbyism while smiling and nodding in front of the cameras didn't work out too good, either.

I always seek middle ground, compromise. But the pendulum swings, and I'm not the one to stop it.
