Hello to everyone in my beloved @plantpower(vegan) community.

Today I am very happy to share this vegan purchase of capers. These as well as olives are ingredients widely used in my family for meals in the celebration of Christmas and New Year, as you know the Hallacas, ham bread, stuffed pastries, tortillas and others. Also in special celebrations to give a very substantial and different taste to meals.

Capers have a very particular flavor and they are fantastic since a small amount of them is enough to add flavor to meals. For example, I add 2 tablespoons to my vegetable stew for four people. Likewise, I use capers in my cooking especially when I prepare tomato-based pasta sauces. They provide a flavor with a touch of acidity and their characteristic flavor is very exquisite. It's amazing how delicious this can be when we put our creativity into every meal.

The biggest advantage of buying capers; as it was today's purchase, is that I can use them for different meals taking into account that I only add a little bit of them.

I tell you that this time I went to several places to buy, but I had to discard some of those places, because I was not convinced by the way of packaging, presentation, packaging and appearance. To be more specific, I mean that I observed in one of the supermarkets a presentation that only had plastic paper, in addition to observing the preservative salt in a fairly large proportion in relation to the amount of capers. I must say that I am buying capers and not salt. In this case when you prepare these capers with these characteristics; they are reduced and it is not an economical purchase. So I opted to go to the supermarket near my house.

In "Galerias", I found that the packaging is a plastic container and hermetically sealed. It had the date of packaging and also the green color with no salt residue. They were also wet with a little bit of liquid which is the vinegar where they are preserved. For me it was the best purchase option. The price per weight of capers was also lower. In Galerias the price per kilo was 5.39 $ and the portion I bought weighed 330 grams at a cost of 1.78 $. Enough for several preparations.

To preserve my capers in this opportunity, it is to take care to take the amount to use with a clean spoon and immediately cover them very well. Afterwards, store them in the refrigerator. Keeping capers with their humidity is important, as it is a way to preserve their freshness, aroma and flavor.

GridArt_20240117_174922976.jpg

In my experience, when I have bought capers in bags with a lot of salt, as described above, I have kept them in the freezer for a longer shelf life. At the moment of using them, I put them in water to soak so that they release a little of the salt. But this way of preserving them I feel that they lose the flavor having to put a larger amount of them to provide the substanciodo and characteristic flavor that they possess.

Friends of #hive I hope you liked my purchase, how to preserve them and the meals where I usually add them. A pleasure to share my experiences in vegan food.

Happy day friends

I didn't know what capers were, and they were completely foreign to my country. It probably doesn't grow here and isn't even sold in my area, if it were, I think it would be very expensive.

But I immediately looked for it on the internet yesterday. Ah, how useful this fruit is, how lucky you are to have it there!

Hello, what a pleasure to greet you and thank you for your comment. To complement the comment of our friend @sirenahippie the capers that we consume in our country are imported. They are used in our celebration meals as our friend explained. Their properties and potential health benefits are currently being studied. I particularly love capers and I hope to prepare dishes including them soon.

Thank you for providing detailed information about capers.

I'm very curious to see and try it directly!

Hi @nurfay

The scientific name of the shrub that produces the caper is Capparis spinosa. There are some plants from the Agave family, which produce a flower and you get something similar to capers. Generally the caper bush grows in temperate climates like that of Europe, except that because we, in a large part of Latin America, having been a European colony in past centuries, we have similar gastronomy to the Spanish one.

I hope one day you can get capers, they will give great flavor and a new level to your recipes. Greetings.

Thank you for the new knowledge about capers @sirenahippie. Hopefully I can see it in person one day!.
