Many places do laser shows instead of fireworks. Probably more for environmental reasons than because they care about animals, but it's still a nice and quiet show to watch.

I think the lasers are a good alternative, although I think they can have adverse effects on night birds, they disorient them, however, the damage to the rest of the creatures is reduced.
I hadn't thought about that, really. But if it's the light that affect the night birds, maybe regular fireworks are just as bad for them. And street lights, cars, neon signs...
Fireworks, or pyrotechnics, are much worse. Better are the lasers. I wish people loved animals more.
