The Pemones are an indigenous people who inhabit the Southeast of Venezuela, specifically they live in the State of Bolivar, occupying the territories known as the Gran Sabana and the Jungle where the Canaima National Park is located, they live on the borders of Venezuela with Guyana and Brazil.
According to Venezuelan statistics, their population is estimated at 36,000 inhabitants and there are three groups: The Taurepan, Arekuna and Kamarakoto. These three groups are identified by the area where they live, all distributed along the border with Brazil and Guyana, distributed in jungle and savannah areas, places where minerals abound, especially gold.

During my visit, I had the opportunity to listen to a story told by a Pemon about the origin of his people. According to his story, there was a leafy tree that gave his tribe everything they needed, fruits, vegetables and vegetables of all kinds. Under this tree ran a river rich in all kinds of fish, large and small.
In the tribe there were two brothers, they were the sons of the chieftain, one of them was happy to receive the blessings of the tree of life, but his other brother was filled with greed and thought that if he cut down the tree, he would get all the treasures it hid.

So he felled the tree. Once it fell to the ground, all the fruits, vegetables and greens were scattered on the ground. The river that ran under the tree overflowed and flooded many areas, creating the great Orinoco River and creating smaller branches.
The fish that lived under the tree also came out. The big ones stayed living in the great river, but the small fish took canoes and advanced to live in the small tributaries near the Tepuyes. From that day on, all the Pemón have to work the land and fish for food, and so ends the story told by the Pemón.

Certainly the Pemones believe in spirits, good and bad. They respect the mountains and the rivers. They often say that it is the spirits that manifest themselves through nature that live in the mountains. The truth is that it is a beautiful town with a rich cultural tradition.
Something I loved is that their features are Asian, but their skin is olive and their hair is black, straight and with a shine that beats any beauty product we can buy in a cosmetics store. The secret, the tea that forms in the streams, after the leaves fall into their waters.

Durante mi visita, tuve la oportunidad de escuchar una historia en boca de un pemón que hablaba sobre el origen de su pueblo. Según su relato existía un árbol frondoso que daba a su tribu todo lo que necesitaban, frutas, verduras y vegetales de todo tipo. Bajo este árbol corría un río rico en todo tipo de variedad de peces, grandes y pequeños.
En la tribu habían dos hermanos, eran los hijos del cacique, uno de ellos, estaba conforme en recibir las bendiciones del árbol de la vida, pero su otro hermano se llenó de avaricia y pensó que si derribaba el árbol, obtendría todos los tesoros que escondía.
Fue así que derribó el árbol. Una vez esté cayó al suelo, todos los frutos, verduras y vegetales se esparcieron en la tierra. El río que corría bajo el árbol se desbordó e inundó muchas zonas, creando el gran Río: El Orinoco y creándose ramificaciones más pequeñas.
Los peces que habitaban bajo el árbol también salieron. Los grandes se quedaron viviendo en el gran río, pero los peces pequeños tomaron canoas y avanzaron hasta vivir en los pequeños afluentes cercanos a los Tepuyes. Desde ese día todos los Pemones tienen que trabajar la tierra y dedicarse a la pesca para poder alimentarse y así termina la historia contada por el Pemón.
Ciertamente los pemones creen en espíritus, buenos y malos. Respetan a la montaña y a los ríos. Muchas veces dicen que son los espíritus que se manifiestan a través de la naturaleza, quienes viven en las montañas. La verdad es un pueblo hermoso con una rica tradición cultural.
Algo que me encantó es que sus rasgos asiáticos, pero su piel es aceitunada y su cabellera es negra, lacia y con un brillo que le gana a cualquier producto de belleza que podamos comprar en una tienda de cosméticos. El secreto, el té que se forma en los arroyos, luego que las hojas caen en sus aguas.

Que hermosa experiencia, yo me crié en El Paují, y mi juventud la pasé en un internado en la aldea de Maurak , a 30 minutos de Santa Elena de Uairén, hoy de mis mejores amigos son Pemones, me crié entre ellos y aprendí a verlos como iguales, eran mis hermanos, muchas experiencias, hasta novios y en muchas oportunidades hice casabe de la forma tradicional acompañando a mis amigas en sus casas.
