C’est en Pennsylvanie, aux Etats-Unis que fut découvert le pétrole en 1859 par Edwin Drake et George Bissel. Après quelques années plus tard, la mise en place de la première société de raffinage de pétrole par John Rockefeller. Son nom : La « standard oil ». A l’époque, la principale utilité du pétrole était la fabrication de kérosène pour l’éclairage.
En 1873, la recherche des nouvelles sources de pétrole sur le continent Russe. La production de pétrole russe sera plus tard développée par les Rothschild alors qu’en Indonésie, la production commence sous le nom de la compagnie Royal Dutch.
En 1892, c’est la naissance de la compagnie Shell. Fondée par Marcus Samuel, cette dernière a pour fonction de transporter le pétrole des différentes sources vers les pays consommateurs.
Rapidement menacé par l’invention de l’ampoule électrique, le pétrole retrouve rapidement ses lettres de noblesse avec l’arrivée de la première voiture en 1896.
La richesse de la production au Moyen-Orient telle qu’on la connaît aujourd’hui n’est apparue qu’en 1901 avec la première concession anglaise en Iran. S’en suivront de nombreuses découvertes de puits de pétrole à travers les Etats-Unis, notamment au Texas, en Californie ou encore en Oklahoma.
Dans les années 1920, on assiste à un véritable boom du pétrole, notamment en Irak, puis en Arabie Saoudite.
En 1924 est créée la première compagnie française des pétroles CFP que l’on connait aujourd’hui sous le nom Total.
Dans les années 40, le pétrole devient bien plus qu’une affaire d’économie et commence à influencer fortement la politique internationale.
L’OPEP ou Organisation des Pays Producteurs de Pétrole, est créée en 1960 et regroupe l’Arabie Saoudite, le Venezuela, Le Koweït, l’Iran et l’Irak.

The wealth of production in the Middle East as we know it today did not appear until 1901 with the first English concession in Iran. Many discoveries of oil wells will follow across the United States, notably in Texas, California and Oklahoma.
In the 1920s, there was a real oil boom, particularly in Iraq, then in Saudi Arabia.
In 1924, the first French oil company CFP was created, which we know today as Total.
In the 1940s, oil became much more than a matter of economics and began to strongly influence international politics.
OPEC or Organization of Petroleum Producing Countries, was created in 1960 and brings together Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Kuwait, Iran and Iraq.

Actually, yes, oil is a source of pollution. However, it is a global economic and industrial resource like a revolution since its discovery, and whatever alternative energy sources are sought, oil accounts for 41.7% of the energy consumed globally.
