Thank God for the life of bro Eli. He has really explained this well, and he has cleared all confusion. Stauros can mean many things, it can mean a stake, a pole or a cross but it is clear that it was a tree and not concrete or iron. See:-

Acts 5:30
The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.

Acts 13:29
And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre.

The cross is a sign of death and suffering.
