We are the children of God because we were created in the image of God. God created all things but it is not all creatures that carry the image of God. When God created the entire universe, he only created man in His image. Man alone is the one who is created to look like God. The animals and the plants do not look like God. They are referred to as living things by scientists. Being a living thing according to the description of science does not suggest that they are in the image of God. God spoke every other creature into existence but he created man and breathed upon him the breath of life.
Carrying the image of God means that we look like God. God is the one that we resemble. So, if we resemble God we should act and behave like God. Our likeness as that of God is to do the things that God does and shun the things which God does not do. For instance, God does not lie. So, we should not lie. God is love and He so much loves the world that he gave his only begotten Son. We should also love our brethren and our neighbors. We should show forth the kind of characters which God has.
What is it like if someone who is supposed to be in the image of God exhibits sinful characters? Such a person is carrying the image of the devil. He does not look like God; he looks like the devil.
We are actually created in the image and likeness of God and so we must live our life fulfilling his will and desire
