With or Without A Safety Net? - Late Night Blogging

in HiveHustlers2 years ago

My son has late on his bus this morning... again... Now, if you are a parent, you probably know that these things happen... For some people, it happens once-twice, for others 10-20 times, and for someone every day... Why is that happening? We are different, but is it something that we are born with? Can we learn to be punctual? Is it a skill, habit, or responsibility?

Children are like that from day 1... They try to find the limits every single day, in every situation... But, they aren't investigating only their limits, but also the limits of their parents! You have probably seen at least once in your life the scene in the supermarket when a child is screaming, crying, rolling on the floor, just to get a certain toy or chocolate... The kid doesn't do that for the first time... It knows that parents will give in and buy the thing... They already did that in the past and it worked out, so why not repeat it?

The same goes for my son... This wasn't the first time that he was late... It happened before, and it will happen again... Taking his time, distracted by his mobile phone, or who knows what, going to the bus station in the last seconds... It's normal that he will be late sometimes... Maybe he doesn't do that on purpose, but unconsciously, somewhere deep inside, he knows that his mother will come to him and take him to school by car... His mother is a safety net...

I remember my childhood... I got late 2-3 times, too... But, I didn't have a safety net... My parents didn't have a car, and I had to wait for the next bus or take a hitchhiking... After getting bad notes in school, I have learned my lesson... I went 5 minutes earlier to the bus station...

Now, what's the point of this story? Well, there is a huge difference between doing things in life with or without a safety net... When you have one, you are giving yourself space for mistakes, which sometimes is exactly what happens... You are doing things more "relaxed" as you know that you will have a second or third chance... That you can repeat and try again...

<-------------------------------->

In crypto, I know a lot of people who are doing it as a hobby... They have their 9 to 5 work, come home, poke around crypto, buy some shitcoins without the research, and don't care what will happen if they have picked wrong... Tomorrow, they will go to work and earn money for living there, and crypto is a "side job"... If it goes well, great... If not, they have their "normal" job... Unfortunately, many crypto (and Youtube) influencers are in this category... With that attitude, they are creating content, presenting themselves as experts, and luring people who don't have a safety net to invest more than they afford to lose...

I said it before and I will say it again... People who work only in (and for) crypto are those who DO CARE... Those are people who are aware that, maybe, there is no second chance... It's now or never... And with that attitude, they will research as much as possible about the asset before investing a dime into it... Yes, they can be wrong even then, but the probability of mistakes is much lower...

They will probably catch the bus and be on time for the meeting... It's great to have a safety net, but we should try to do our best in every possible moment and situation... We don't want to hit the ground, and therefore, we will try to avoid that happening by doing all possible measures to prevent it!

Thank you for your valuable time,

~ph~

This speaks to just about every parent out there, and I will say that it doesn't get much better, even at 22 and 17, lol.

The biggest problem I am seeing with kids today is they rely too much on the safety net for too long. But that also could just be the times we are in. As parents it is up to us to teach personal responsibility. I am proud to say that it resonated with at least one of my kids, lol. My 17 year old daughter is way more productive than I was at her age and takes responsibility for herself with many things. So I feel that I did a decent job there, lol.

Safety nets are extremely important in finances that is for sure and it really sucks when your safety net is no longer there, like I am having to deal with now. So it's important to be able to be resourceful for when your net has some holes and doesn't keep you protected like you thought.

Anyway, this resonated with me as I am dealing with this on a personal level at the moment.

Peace!

I am proud to say that it resonated with at least one of my kids, lol.

Yeah, man... You have a safety net there as you have 2 kids... lol... I have just one, so I couldn't afford mistakes (if I do, I have to work on the next one... lol)...

it really sucks when your safety net is no longer there, like I am having to deal with now.

I totally get you... I went all in crypto 3-4 years ago and it's nice when you ride the bull wave, but when bears come, no safety net, no weapons, no shields... I suppose that it's a general trend... In bull markets, we don't care and buy as many shitcoins possible... When those are the moments when we have to create a shelter, a safety net that we will use when bad times come... Exactly as you said, we need to be resourceful! They are teaching us to spend, spend, spend, when the main thing today is to save, save, save...

Cheers!

I very much agree with your article. It is a question of balance. If you have a good safety net, you can become complacent and make poor investment choices. But if you don't have a safety net, it's worse because although you will be much more cautious, that will condition you not to take the necessary risks to win.

Exactly! As always, the right balance between "with or without" a safety net is the right way to do things... Not complete risk to "block" you from decisions, but also not too comfortable to waste money!

If I compare my parents and my parent's generation, we seem to do everything for our kids which wasn't there when we were younger. Maybe we are trying to overcompensate?

I have a safety net, but I guess this is more due to diversification and building different asset class streams.

Great article!

I suppose that all of us have a safety net... Some of us have a small one, and others a huge... :)

That probably goes in cycles... I suppose that my parents were doing the same, trying to give me more than they had... But, definitely, we try to overcompensate and "overprotect" our children... It's normal for parents to do that, but still, maybe we should do it less... for their good... :)
