Hello dear travelers. Those who know might guess from the winding roads. This is the road to Sitges. Today we came to this beautiful city.
However the road has two major drawbacks. It is narrow and there is no separate lane for cyclists. This situation causes incredible traffic. Due to the narrowness of the road it is not always possible to overtake cyclists, so traffic slows down and sometimes queues form. Cyclists are also very anxious and try to ride close to the rocks. Fortunately the rocks are surrounded by a net, so the likelihood of stones falling from above is reduced. It’s a bit dangerous, but the road is really beautiful.
Before arriving in Sitges we stopped by a town called Vilanova i la Geltrú. There is an antique shop there and I couldn't resist exploring it a bit. So before touring Sitges I’ll take you on a short tour inside this shop. Initially I wasn't planning on taking photos here, but it’s so interesting that I want to show you what's new, the prices and what I liked. You can reach the town of Vilanova directly by train from Barcelona.
At the entrance of the shop we were greeted by a painting we really liked. This painting is 150 euros and has small ships on it. There is every kind of item here, including furniture. The prices vary greatly. For example, you can buy a painting for 650 euros. There are both modern art pieces and objects with history here.
There are some unique items here. For example, there is a set for 60 euros, including glasses, spoons, bottles and some rum or other drinks.
You can find many interior design books. A book about Marilyn Monroe was 40 euros. This book contains a lot of information, filled with original letters and important documents and it is written in Spanish. I really liked the book, but if it were 20 euros, I would have bought it without hesitation. 40 euros feels too much for now.
A painting standing across costs 200 euros and the taller one next to it is 220 euros. But we particularly liked a beautiful landscape painting valued at 400 euros. For sculpture lovers there are various sculptures here and the prices vary. For example, small angel sculptures are 20 euros. A cute service set is 100 euros.
There are also examples of modern art, like a painting for 750 euros. We might have had a chance to bargain, but we were unsure.
Downstairs there were modern art pieces for 220 euros. You can find all sorts of things here. A star-shaped chandelier is 195 euros. Next to it there is a cute parrot and a teapot for 75 euros. We didn’t leave without shopping from here. We found a book about Formula 1 and bought two more paintings.
Then we went to Sitges and started exploring.
We visited the beach in Sitges. This year it has become very small. Part of it is underwater and half of the beach has disappeared. Compared to last year it is much smaller. There are no beach cafes this year either. Compared to the Maresme coastline and Costa Brava, it is always warmer here and the water is warmer. Because the water is shallower, it heats up easily. The town we came from is 25 degrees right now and here it is 28 degrees.
We visited the Sitges cemetery. It is located next to the beach and is open to the public, so anyone can visit and see it.
Here there are columbariums. Each small window represents a separate grave, with containers holding ashes inside. There is also a ladder to reach the upper shelves.
In the center of the columbarium, there are graves designed like works of art. Besides the large stairs at the back, there is also a more practical and comfortable elevator-like system. Still there is a sturdier-looking ladder available to reach the top plaques. As someone with a fear of heights, I would prefer using this ladder because I might fall from the other one and find myself a grave right here. 😁
Besides that the sea view here is very beautiful. There are several cemeteries in Barcelona as well, such as the Poblenou Cemetery, which is a place where tours are organized and is also very beautiful and atmospheric. Cemeteries in Spain are more known for cremation and the storage of urns.
Afterwards we went for a walk in the city.
We had lunch at a café bar right next to the beach. The prices were quite reasonable. Main courses were around 20 euros and gazpacho was about 8 euros. This bar is located at the end of the beach and here, nudists and clothed people are mixed. The beach is approximately 200 meters long. If you plan to spend time on this beach, you should be aware that all kinds of people are present. The beach is hidden by vegetation and ends by the rocks. The front part of the beach is central and not suitable for those bothered by naked people. If you don't like such environments, you should avoid this area.
In the square next to the church street musicians usually play. You can listen to beautiful music and if you like, you can leave them some money. When we went a musician was playing. Despite it being a Saturday, the square was quite empty and peaceful.
We headed to the sunny side. This side is completely covered in sunshine because the sun is shining directly on us. People are playing volleyball, some are sunbathing and others are swimming. It’s not an annoying crowd and you can relax and walk comfortably on the beach. You can stroll freely along the promenade.
My friend and I looked for ice cream. I wanted Sicilian mandarin ice cream. I finally found my favorite ice cream shop, called Dino. I recommend you go to this ice cream shop. It’s worth waiting in a small line for the Sicilian mandarin ice cream here.
My ice cream had mandarin, pistachio and cookie flavors, all of which were perfectly delicious. This taste reminds me of my childhood. There used to be seeded and sour mandarins. Pistachio ice cream also has a very intense flavor and all are creamy. The price is 3.90 euros.
As the sun was setting the weather cooled down a bit, making it easier to breathe since it was very hot during the day. There were more tourists on the streets, probably because they spent most of the day by the pool or in air-conditioned places. The promenade started to get crowded, with many street artists performing in different spots. There were children running on the street and people walking their dogs.
We passed by the restaurants all of which were full. Walking here in the evenings is really peaceful and pleasant. Spanish restaurants are usually noisy, but in the restaurants preferred by tourists here, you can find a quieter environment. People usually talk loudly and have fun, but here there is a quieter atmosphere.
We had a pleasant walk in this beautiful city of Sitges, just 40 minutes from Barcelona. There is a tourist train here, which we haven’t ridden yet, but this train travels along the coast for 4 euros. One way is 2.50 euros. It goes from the church to the end of the beach. There are also the Sanway hotel, golf courses and a dog beach.
