Castillo de San Carlos, sitio de reclusión de una heroína de independencia
When I was on vacation on the island of Margarita in Venezuela, I spent an afternoon at the Castillo de San Carlos, I toured it and learned interesting facts about the history of this fortress, besides taking some nice pictures of the place, which I am going to share with you today.
Cuando estuve de vacaciones por la isla de Margarita en Venezuela, pasé una tarde por el Castillo de San Carlos lo recorrí y conocí datos interesantes de la historia de esta fortaleza, además de tomar unas lindas fotos de lugar, que hoy te voy a compartir.
The purpose of the castle was to protect the city from the invasion of pirates, according to historical data it took 20 years to finish construction between 1664 and 1684, the base is shaped like a star, has 4 observation towers and 12 cannons pointing to the sea, is known for being the site of confinement of Luisa Caceres de Arismendi, the heroine of the independence. Most of the walls were built with giant stones and are still intact. It was declared a national historic monument on October 26, 1965.
Honestly, it is very extensive in history and level of preservation, and when touring it in detail you will notice that the cell of Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi is not the only interesting thing.
El propósito del castillo era resguardar la ciudad de la invasión de piratas, según datos históricos duro 20 años en terminarse de construir entre 1664 y 1684, la base tiene forma de estrella, cuenta con 4 torres de observación y 12 cañones apuntando hacia el mar, es conocido por ser el sitio de reclusión de Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi, heroína de la independencia. La mayor parte de las murallas fueron construidas con piedras gigantes y se encuentran intactas, fue declarado monumento histórico nacional el 26 de octubre de 1965.
Sinceramente, es muy extenso en historia y nivel de conservación, al recorrerlo en detalle notarán que la celda de Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi no es lo único interesante.
You cannot go to Margarita without visiting the San Carlos Castle
The Castillo de San Carlos has been renovated and is now a museum, many of the fort's rooms have been converted into exhibition areas. The restoration was completed in 1968, the museum includes paintings of heroes of the war of Independence as well as antique weapons and a replica of Christopher Columbus' ship, the Santa Maria. The museum also has a collection of memorabilia of Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi, whose remains are now in the National Pantheon in Caracas Venezuela.
El Castillo de San Carlos ha sido renovado y ahora es un museo, muchas de las habitaciones del fuerte se convirtieron en áreas de exhibición. La restauración se completó en 1968 y el museo incluye pinturas de héroes de la guerra de la Independencia también hay armas antiguas y una réplica del barco de Cristóbal Colón, el Santa María. El museo también cuenta con una colección de recuerdos de Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi, los restos de ella se encuentran ahora en el Panteón Nacional en Caracas Venezuela.
One of the sites of the castle is called the dungeon of oblivion, there is where the Spaniards sent the prisoners and locked them up without water or food until they died of starvation, that was the method they used with Luisa Caceres de Arismendi for about three months, as a way to force General Juan Bautista Arismendi to an exchange of prisoners, before which he said: "Tell the Spanish chief that without a country I do not want a wife". From that moment on, the conditions of captivity worsened for her.
Uno de los sitios del castillo es llamado el calabozo del olvido, allí es donde los españoles enviaban a los prisioneros y los encerraban sin agua ni comida hasta que morían de inanición, ese fue el método que usaron con Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi durante aproximadamente tres meses, como manera de obligar al general Juan Bautista Arismendi a un canje de prisioneros, ante lo cual el expresó: «Diga al jefe español que sin patria no quiero esposa». A partir de aquel momento empeoran las condiciones del cautiverio para ella.
Luisa Caceres de Arismendi is considered a heroine because she never betrayed the location of her husband nor implored for her life to maintain her husband's strong decision to fight for independence.
