To Snip or Not to Snip? I’m a Bit Confused

in Caturday4 months ago (edited)

Blu’s such a sweetheart — calm, cuddly, and not the type to cause chaos. He doesn't spray, wander far, or get into trouble.

Honestly, he’s just a happy, chilled-out little guy. But I’m a bit confused about whether I should get him neutered or just let things be.

I’ve already had Coco spayed and done everything I can to protect the local wildlife — leashes, bells on collars, and supervised outings. My neighbours are lovely and care deeply for their birds and hedgehogs, and they even have a pond full of fancy koi fish. But Blu’s never really been into hunting — he’s more about finding the perfect nap spot.

There are health benefits to neutering, such as lowering the risk of certain cancers and suppressing hormonal urges that might make him wander or get into fights. However, I haven't noticed any hormonal urges or behavioural changes yet. Possibly, it's still early? He's 9 months old.

He's just so content and gentle as he is. I don’t want to fix what isn’t broken, but I also wonder if it’s the right thing to do. I've been suppressing this decision for a while, and I believe neutering when older can be a little risky due to possible complications.

Have you ever been stuck on a decision like this with your pets?

I would love to hear your thoughts! 💙

Have a lovely day, everyone.

In the end, it’s your decision. But, if you have doubts then you have them for a reason. Not necessarily logical. Hunch or gut feeling is reason enough.

@tipu curate

Yes, thank you. 😊

I had a cat named Wooly Bear that saved my life from fire, and I didn't spay him out of regard for his courage and kindness to me - until he had a medical problem that made it necessary to save his life.

I still miss him. I can't advise you usefully, but I'm sure glad I'm not someone's pet or slave that this might have been done to me. I wish you many long years of love and mutual respect with Blu.

Thanks!

Wooly Bear is such a lovely name; it sounds like he was an amazing companion. you made the right decision. I am grateful for your kind words. Thank you for sharing that with me. 💗😊

He earned his name. I once shared a trailer with a roommate who drank heavily. Woody had a party during which the power went out. Since this was February in Alaska, the absence of power for the electric heat was not survivable, and so the propane oven was used to heat the trailer. Woody was very drunk when this changeover in power sources was necessary, and of course the stove had to be lit with matches. Woody took a while to find the matches after turning the gas up on the oven. When he lit the match he ignited the fuel air bomb he had created by leaving the gas cranked open for that five minutes while he looked for the matches, blowing all the doors in the house open, and knocking himself ass over teakettle.

Wooly Bear had been living there a while, and knew that when the oven door was open to heat the trailer, it was nice and warm under the open door. When the explosion occurred, he dashed into the back rooms of the trailer, quite traumatized. Some minutes later, while we were coping with the aftermath of the explosion, Wooly Bear crept trembling from the nether recesses of the trailer to seek safety by my side. He had been almost at the center of the explosion, and his head was covered with singed hair, the tips of every hair whitened and curly. He looked like a sheep. Thus the first part of his name 'Wooly'.

The second part of his name was earned during a vist to a vet, whom Wooly had decided meant him ill. He reared up on his hind legs and lashed out with his forelimbs, giving the vet an almost life-threatening gash across the throat, nearly deep enough to engage the carotid and bleed him out. Resting on his hind legs with his forelimbs out caused Wooly to resemble a standing bear, and thus the latter portion of his name was added.

He had a lot of character, and for some reason was fond of me. I was very fond of him.

Awww, that's amazing! I love that story—a mix of fun, thrill, and heartwarming moments. Wooly Bear was full of character; my imagination kept going as I read. You're a good writer too! 😊🩷
