Here's my entry for the BeerSaturday 353 with a beer bought during my weekend in Stoneham (see Wednesday Walk challenge: Stoneham) from the brewery La Souche. This is a double NEIPA Cry-O-Loup. I bought again without looking at the alcohol content...

Here is the map of Quebec where I can show you precisely the location of the brewery. This week, we're near Quebec City, in the Stoneham ski resort, where you'll find this excellent brewery La Souche. Perfect after a day's skiing for a good beer or/and a good meal.

Voici la carte du Québec ou je peux vous montrer précisément la localisation de la brasserie. Cette semaine, nous sommes prêt de la ville de Québec, dans la station de ski Stoneham ou se trouve cette excellente brasserie La Souche. Parfait après une journée de ski pour prendre une bonne bière ou alors bien manger.

Here's the brasserie, the terrace wasn't open yet, but in summer it must be nice to enjoy a pint or two in the sun. / FR : Voici la brasserie, la terrasse n'était pas encore ouverte mais l'été cela doit être agréable de déguster une pinte ou deux au soleil.

But the interior is welcoming too, with lots of wood in the decor and greenery with plants hanging from the ceiling everywhere. What's more, the food was really good, and my brie and caramelized apple burger was a real treat. I had time to taste two beers during the meal: the Loup des Saules a NEIPA (very good) and the Beach Royale, a sour beer with blueberries and blackcurrants to celebrate the brewery's 12th anniversary. Less appreciated, a little too strong in alcohol for me.

Mais l'intérieur est invitant aussi avec beaucoup de bois dans la décoration et de la verdure avec des plantes vertes partout accrochées jusqu'au plafond. De plus, la nourriture était vraiment bonne, enfin mon burger au brie et aux pommes caramélisés, un vrai régal. J'ai eu le temps de déguster deux bières pendant le repas : la Loup des Saules une NEIPA et la Beach Royale, une bière sure aux bleuets et au cassis pour fêter les 12 ans d'existence de la brasserie. Moins appréciée un peu trop fort en alcool pour moi.

La Souche (Tree stump) is a brewery that set up shop in the Limoilou district 12 years ago (2012). Then in 2017 it also moved to Stoneham to brew beers in the forest and also expand to offer in the restaurant a farm table with local products. Really good, I was surprised by the quality of the food. And their beers are up to the task, too, winning several medals at the World Beer Award.

La Souche est une brasserie qui s'est installé dans le quartier de Limoilou il y a 12 ans (2012). Puis en 2017 elle s'est installée aussi à Stoneham pour brasser les bières en forêt et aussi s'agrandir pour offrir dans le restaurant une table fermière avec des produits locaux. Vraiment bon, j'ai été surpris par la qualité de la nourriture. Et leurs bières sont aussi à la hauteur avec plusieurs médailles lors du World Beer Award.


🍺 Tasting / Dégustation :

Cry-O-Loup is a double NEIPA with Harlequin and Olicana English hops (I just see they just released the same beer but with Australian hops 🤔). I don't yet know the different hops and their characteristics. But it sounds a lot like the grape varieties in wine. On the other hand, as I said in the introduction, I hadn't noticed the high alcohol content (8%) when I bought it. As I'm in my NEIPA period, I took it without looking. In the glass, like all NEIPAs, there's that characteristic cloudy straw-yellow color with a good white collar. On the palate, there's a nice bitterness with a grassy, fruity taste. Unfortunately for me, the high alcohol content spoils the taste a little.

La Cry-O-Loup est une double NEIPA avec les houblons anglais Harlequin et Olicana (il vient de sortir la même bière mais avec des houblons australien). Je ne connais pas encore les différents houblons et leurs caractéristiques. Mais cela ressemble beaucoup aux cépages dans le vin. Par contre, comme je le disais en introduction, je n'avais pas remarqué le haut pourcentage d'alcool (8%) lors de l'achat. Comme je suis dans ma période NEIPA, j'ai pris sans regarder. Dans le verre, comme toutes les NEIPA, on retrouve cette robe caractéristique jaune paille et trouble avec un bon col blanc. En bouche, on a une belle amertume avec un gout herbacé et fruité. Malheureusement pour moi, le trop fort taux d'alcool gâche un peu le gout.

Design

La Brasserie La Souche also stands out for its design. All the cans are beautifully illustrated (the store sells them as posters). Unfortunately, I don't know which artist(s) do them. In the case of Cry-O-Loup, we find a poor wolf being cryogenically frozen in London. Cool (not for the wolf 😀)...

La brasserie La Souche se distingue aussi avec son design. Toutes les canettes ont une magnifique illustration (la boutique les vend en forme de posters). Malheureusement je ne sais pas quel(s) artiste(s) les réalise. Dans le cas du Cry-O-Loup, on retrouve un pauvre loup en train de faire cryogéniser à Londres.

Yes! Many brewerys allow you to do so . My ex husband's brewery has little 'tours'

Yes, often next to the brewing facilities, there's a point of sale and a place to enjoy a pint or two... at least in Quebec.

They should make a CryptoLoup lol maybe a play on the Wolf of Wall Street 🤔 that burger sounds awesome. Sometimes fancy burgers are just a lot of unrelated, strong flavors thrown on a hamburger... this combo sounds very interesting. I would definitely have one.

Generally speaking, the food in breweries is nothing special. But here it was really good, a bit like Dunham. On my next trip to Quebec City, I'm going to try their premises in the Limoilou district.
