How to Really Thrive in Hive

in Hive PH4 years ago (edited)

Hello Hiveians!

I was tagged by Jo (@paulajogalix) to join the #thriveonhive challenge and I really love to join. However, recent circumstances made me think twice before jumping into the fun. Don't get me wrong. I loved the challenge the moment I saw someone posted about it. I just have some reservations and it was compounded by what happened lately. So, I decided to have a different approach.

My first reservation was that I should copy the same format of the post. I already shared that I have a personal choice of format and I intend to keep that in all of my posts unless I feel like changing it. For now, I'm comfortable with my format and if I'll just copy someone else's, my OCD self would be triggered. I'm not saying that the chosen format of the challenge was inferior to mine, but as I've said, it's a matter of personal preference. By the way, you can find my personal choice of formatting techniques here:

Another reason is the irony that the #thriveonhive challenge became a death warrant of one fellow Filipino Hiver. As much as we want to impose the idea that ignorance of the common rule excuses no one, we have to show empathy. At first, I was firm on the judgment about what happened, but after @iameden reached out to me, I have some questions that are left unanswered. Since it has been resolved, I'll leave it as is.

So, instead of joining the challenge, I decided to give some tips on how to really thrive in Hive. I hope this can help prevent unpleasant experiences in the future. Here are some tips:

1. Magbasa, Magmasid, at Magtanong [Read, Observe, and Inquire]

This one is directed to the newbies:

Don't join in challenges if you didn't totally grasp its rules. Read carefully the rules, understand its context, observe what others are doing, and if there are still unclear points, ask questions. Don't ever jump into the bandwagon just because it looks lucrative.

Hive has its own unwritten rules. You might think of it as a wild west where you can do anything you want, but there's a common ground that every sound mind agrees. You can actually do anything you want or post anything you want, but you can't expect everyone to agree with what you are posting. There's always an incentive and the goal is always to incentivize good behaviour and punish the dubious ones.

To the newbies, you might have raked the good rewards from what you are posting, but always reflect on it and the manner of how it was posted. Always ask the question: "Does it bring value to Hive?". After all, you're extracting value through the rewards you get. It's just right that you give value in return through the content you're putting on the chain. As they say in economics, there's no such thing as free lunch.

I'm always open to answer questions. You can reach out to me anytime if you have questions related to Hive. I might not have all the answers, but I can always ask the right people to answer those questions. Although I'm not claiming to be the sole authority to answer questions. You always ask anyone you trust to give you the right answers. Just make sure that whoever you're asking doesn't have a conflicting agenda.

2. Bantayan ang Inyong mga Inimbitahan [Keep an Eye on Your Invitees]

This one is directed to those who invited someone to Hive:

Always keep an eye on your friends, especially the ones you invited. Also, be a model for them. Set a good example. Watch out for their behaviours. Call out those that are not acceptable to the community. That's how your invitees will thrive in Hive: with your help.

I invited @kayceeports2020 here and so far she has been very successful even if she's still very new. She's really good as a blogger and that is the main reason why she's successful, but she doesn't know everything there is to know here. She has to know the culture, common and accepted practices, governance, economics, unacceptable behaviours, etc. We keep a constant line of communication on Twitter. She can ask me questions anytime and I tried my best to answer her questions immediately. Because I was the one who invited her, I'm responsible in making sure that she won't have unpleasant experiences. That's how you retain users.

I have set up a few accounts for my friends recently and I hope they'll make their introduction post soon, but they kept on asking me questions related to Hive. I tried my best to answer them in a way that they won't get scared of what they might see here. I also made sure that their expectations are aligned with the actual happenings here. Setting unrealistic expectations proved to be fatal. A lot of users left because they haven't met their unrealistic expectations and that's partly due to the people who invited them.

3. Makipagkaibigan [Make Friends]

This is a social blockchain. Reach out to people. Make friends. It's what makes the experience all worthwhile.

I observed that a lot of newbies are so focused on creating their own content that they forgot to look at other's content. When you're in Hive, you are a content consumer as you are a content creator. Focusing all your energy on the latter won't be worth it. You'll eventually run out of ideas on what to post and then you'll realize you're doing it just for the rewards. That's not healthy. Those who left are those who realized it's not worth it to stay. It's either they encountered a bad experience or they were not able to meet their unrealistic expectations. On top of that, they didn't make enough friends that could convince them to stay.

I already said this, but I'll say this again: Sometimes it's not only about quality, but the network you have can also affect the rewards you get.

Hang out on Discord, leave thoughtful comments to posts you really like, follow those you want to follow, and make some noise on Twitter. You friends might be able to help you someday whenever you'll encounter some bad experiences.

4. Iwasan ang mga Alanganing Gawain [Do Not Engage in Questionable Acts]

If you're doing something questionable now, no matter how rewarding, please stop it. It's not sustainable. Think of the long term consequences. You might have got away with it for now, but it will eventually catch up on you. You will definitely get caught one day and you might lose everything in the process.

Farming, shitposting, spamming, or any other act that could bring more harm to the chain than good are shunned here. You might have benefitted from it, but think of Tragedy of the Commons. One day, you'll pay for it and you might not like the outcome.

How many times I was tempted to game the system, but I always thought that it's not sustainable. I also believe in the Ripple Effect. I believe that anything I'm doing now will come back to me one day. If not, I want it to be paid forward. That's why I support @iamyohann's #WhoAreTheyPhilippines Project. It's not because I am truly altruistic, but because I believe my good deeds will not go unnoticed.

Stay on course. If all your friends are doing it, it doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. It doesn't mean it's acceptable because you were not caught.

I hope this post will serve you best one day. As for me, I'll continue to help those who are still new, so articles like this might pop up from time to time.

Happy hiving!

Thank you for sharing this. I found this very informative and I'm glad you have re-formatted your post. I found myself nodding as I read through every line. Being a newbie, I still have a lot to learn. I have been tagged on that challenge, but I didn't participate. I am observing everyone for now and watching how things go.

I found myself nodding as I read through every line.

I love this! ❤️ Char. I just find it necessary because of what happened. I felt obliged to put it here and I hope this will find its way to its intended audience.

Kimmyyyyy!!!
I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY HEART!!!❤
I'M SMILING AND TEARY-EYED AT THE SAME TIME. CAPSLOCK BECAUSE I HAVE AN INTENSE EMOTION.
Sorry for the late reply, I was busy all day long with some other things (really having a hard time to catch up here and there at this point in time).
Got a lot of things to worry about especially these days; trying my best to stand still with all the hustles and bustles of life.
I am totally awe and I am so glad I have you to look after my Mareng @paulajogalix.
As for my other friend, @sucal, he has learned it the hard way and also coping up to do better if not best.
Thank you is not enough to express my gratitude, all you have said has helped me to hold on to this Hive family. Honestly, there were times I want to give up and leave. But, with all these, it gives me the courage to stay.
I love you!
Take care always! ❤

I'm glad to have inspired you to stay. I guess I have fulfilled my purpose then. 😂

Yes, Indeed.
You have a good and kind heart.
It reflects through your writings. 🤍
Thank you so so much!

Personally, I didn't buy into the ThriveOnHive craze. I need to be enlightened as to what we, as hiveians, can learn or get from it.

Maybe I'm too shallow or stupid, but I just don't get it. What's it for? What good does it really do other than one extra post for every one participating. Seeing so many identical posts means that they are quickly going to get burried and ignored. Especially considering that every post on Hive is read by only 1% of the upvoters. Don't quote me on that, it's just based on statistics from my own posts, how many voters vs how many people actually opened the article.

Anyways, coming back to this post, I'm glad you went for a different format. This here is useful and has some great tips and advice. Great work! I say more of this is what is needed.

Personally, I didn't buy into the ThriveOnHive craze. I need to be enlightened as to what we, as hiveians, can learn or get from it.

For those already on the Hive blockchain, the initiative was (as I understand it) intended to reinforce the reasons why we are here. If anyone is disillusioned and considering leaving the platform, it might encourage them to stay.

However, the BIG REASON for the initiative was to provide posts of a positive nature about the Hive blockchain that could be shared to other social media (Twitter, Instagramm, et al.) to advertise and bring more people here. We help the ecosystem grow by onboarding new users, especially with an influx of investors and/or quality-content creators. Many of the #thriveonhive posts have, indeed, been shared to other sites and are already promoting the platform in a positive way.

Thank you for the explanation

Hi @iamyohann and @ybanezkim26,

As the person behind this initiative - I thought I would just step in to clarify a couple of things. First of all it is not a craze - it is a community driven project designed not only to ignite, re-ignite and maintain the passion and enthusiasm among existing members... but to create awareness and generate curiosity for people who have not yet joined us.

As @thekittygirl correctly pointed out, the #thriveonhive posts have stretched FAR beyond this platform.

Maybe I'm too shallow or stupid, but I just don't get it. What's it for? What good does it really do other than one extra post for every one participating. Seeing so many identical posts means that they are quickly going to get burried and ignored.

Campaigns like this have a very key intent -

To give you a little bit of insight into that... today alone, our tweet reach hit almost 50k. and the "campaign" is reaching it's "end" - so these are the LOWEST possible figures I could give you. Using a conservative growth "backward" for the last 7 days at 2% a day - would mean that we have reached an approx. of 300k people on twitter with our link shares alone. This will be ongoing for some time and like I said - is a conservative calculation. This also, does not include all existing blockchain members inspired and encouraged by getting involved. There are a lot of people in this space who feel "lost" and through this initiative we are able to find out "who" they are and guide them appropriately - it also gives them first hand experience from users themselves - "from the horses mouth" so to speak. Each offering their own insights, experience and guidance (in terms of communities etc.)

I am aware that there was an issue with a specific members post being "copied accidentally" during this initiative - I think it is important for me to mention that aside from being on the receiving end of the original authors concerns - we, as a community were not in ANY way involved in this and I feel it in poor taste to taint the efforts of 140 people + because of this. This was an issue that needed to be resolved between @sucal and @mrnightmare89 and he will (no doubt) testify to the fact that we (as community heads) advised that he should handle it in the way he felt fit - irrespective of varying opinions.

In addition, @ybanezkim26 - I just wanted to say that your post is definitely a valuable contribution to this initiative - be it in it's "own style".... because that is neither here nor there. The template is offered primarily for those that are not as comfortable to "join in" on something like this from a blank page - but was ultimately an outline and a guide as to what to write about... If you have explored the #thriveonhivetag you will have seen that there have been MANY variants - some even videos... which is fantastic!!! - Because the format was not in ANY way the primary focus... most grasped this and I hope that my explanation offers some clarity.

Hive needs people to stand together and that is PRECISELY the objective with #thriveonhive.

I really do hope that this clears up some of the grey areas...

Hi @jaynie! Thank you for stepping in to clarify some things. I'm glad this came to your attention. And you coming your way to shed some light to this matter is very commendable. I guess people have expressed their opinions and I already pointed out mine. I am not against the challenge. I just chose a different approach. One that I think I do best.

I usually take the pragmatic approach on things and yes, I agree that this post is neither here nor there. I hope that this will not create further animosity between different stands. As you said, Hive needs people to stand together. I'm always for the general good of the community moving forward.

I will be the LAST person to condemn an "original approach" - that much I promise you.

If you are looking to join a great interactive & supportive #HIVE community on discord that encompasses ALL content genres but isn't just a massive sea of spammers and plagiarists... then come and join us in the Power House Creatives Server

I guess the aim of the challenge is to create some hype or buzz and that in itself is commendable. However, the way it was presented is what holds me back. I was actually planning on what to say in my post, but something happened that sealed my reservations.

Very good post Kim, I understand what you wanted to everyone. This post is like an eye-opener but depends on people how they will understand this. I won't share thoughts about those newcomers because they might found me offensive again.

Yeah, there are just people who are too focused on themselves like me sometimes and in return, I'm not earning that I should have earned before.

Anyway, anyway, you wrote it well kim.

Thank you so much, Pau! Expressing your thoughts is not offensive. It's just people sometimes think of it a different way. I think that's okay. There are different stands and opinions and my goal is to understand all those opinions before giving mine.

I'm afraid because I'm not knowledgeable enough to share mine. I will just choose to be quiet maybe but if they will be persistent. That's the time I will wage war. hahaha

your welcome kim..

No need to wage war. 😂
I love to de-escalate things so I guess that should be my role here.

Ingna ko if naay mangaway nimo kay atong tabangan. 🙈 Joke.

Anyway, I really appreciate your words of encouragement. It keeps me going. Thank you very much!

Awee happy to hear hehe

Cenxa karon rko kreply nabusy si mader 😅😅

A must-read article not just for new members but for the old members too.

I came back last week in July. I mentioned it on my second introductory post (my first one was an epic fail 😅) that coming here after almost three years feels like a newbie. I dedicated my whole night until dawn studying the platform until I bumped into one of your blogs. It was very helpful. I never had a chance to say thank you since it was posted on the first quarter, I guess.

But now, thank you for the helpful tips! Continue to be a blessing to the newcomers. 😊

I'll screenshot this! 😂
Thank you so much! I saw that you're doing well with your posts. Is it safe to say that it was after you tried my choice of formatting techniques? Haha. 🙈

Now I don't know what to say to newcomers anymore. I already ran out of ideas. Haha.

Why would you screenshot it? Sorry, wala ko kagets nganu. 😅

YES! Though I tried gathering some ideas from different bloggers so that my blogs will look nice and presentable. Then I researched the markdown and HTML coding. I tried to avoid tutorials here because I want to learn on my own like doing trial and error. I sometimes use inspect. I'm trying to learn web development because of Hive. 😆 Hashtag feelingon. Hahaha Someone kept on pushing me to learn web dev but neglected it. Guess Hive is the key.

But I've read your travel blog tips, the consistency blog, and other tips for the newbies. Very informative and helpful. I got the idea of a travel series from you. Haha. My first travel blog was in Siquijor and it was really long! It reached almost 3k words or more. 😆

😮 Ako diay ang feelingon. 😂

Anyway, congrats! Keep it up!

Dili man. I tried your format without reading your formatting techniques. Still pasok sa banga. :D You're one of my fave bloggers here in Hive. 😊

Thank you! :)

🥰🥰🥰
