Hola amigos #hivers de esta Comunidad deportiva,
espero que estén pasando el fin de semana en compañía de su deporte favorito ya sea desde el vivo -con las debidas precauciones- o a través de cualquier dispositivo multimedial.
Aprovechando este "impasse" en la Fórmula 1, de la cuál me he ocupado a lo largo de todo el año, en espera que lleguen las presentaciones oficiales de cada equipo quiero compartir con todos los aficcionados al deporte algunas impresiones personales de un deporte que tuve oportunidad de vivir muy de cerca durante mis prolongados años de estadía en Italia e incluso de llegar a pracxticarlo en modo totalmente amateur, aunque los resultados -a decir verdad- fueron catastróficos.
La falta de coordinación de movimientos hacía que estuviera más tiempo en el suelo -o mejor dicho en la nieve- que deslizándome sobre ella.
Si, en efecto, me estoy refiriendo al esquí como deporte.
Recuerdo que en mis primeras aventuras en tierras europeas antes del 2000, en la cuál se mezclaban vacaciones en la nieve e itinerarios alpinos nunca logré entener del todo por qué motivo este hermoso deporte (el deporte blanco junto con el tenis aunque en este caso el blanco es el del ambiente en el que se practica mientras que en el tenis se debe a la vestimenta de los jugadores) se practica tan poco en Sudamérica, a punto tal que ver un participante sudamericano o incluso latinoamericano en algunos puestode relieve en la clasificación general es poco menos que impensable.
En descensa alpina había un par de representantes argentinos (hermanos ambos varón y mujer, cuyos nombres por respeto hago omisión de mencionar) que participaron hasta superados los 30 años de edad. Ver la banderita argentina -el logo- junto al nombre del participante me causaba una cierta sensación de placer, lástima que al ir presentando la tabla de la clasificación general esos nombres ocupaban invariablemente el último lugar. Si había 200 participantes su lugar en la clasificación era ese: el 200.
Después comencé a descubrir algunos casos aislados como el del venezolano César Baena, el primer esquiador de fondo venezolano (una disciplina en la cuál los representantes escandinavos y rusos son casi imbatibles) en participar en una Copa del Mundo.
Pero como estructura deportiva está prácticamente ausente, a pesar de tener la hermosa Cordillera de los Andes, perennemente cubierta de nieve en la mayor parte de los países del cono sur.
Se puede argumentar que es un deporte costoso, pero hay otros deportes que cuestan más y sin embargo de practican.
Falta de disciplina, falta de formación?, no lo se pero es una verdadera pena que este deporte no tenga los adeptos que se merecen.
En Europa Austria es la cuna de la práctica de este deporte sobretodo en la especialidad llamada Esquí Alpino donde tiene los mayores campeones.
De las escuelas de esquí alpino austríacas han salido campeones formidables como Herman Maier "Herminator" -su apodo es un acrónimo entre su nombre y el Terminator de Arnold Schwarzenegger- invencibles hasta que la edad y el deterioro físico no les dijeros basta, considerado por muchos especialistas el más grande esquiador de todos los tiempos. En un accidente motociclístico en el 2001 casi pierdela pierna derecha. Se recupera, vuelve al Circo Blanco -como se llama a este deporte en la jerga d elos cronistas deportivos especializados- dos años más tarde y contra todas las expectativas torna a los vértices de la clasificación general. Un centenar de podios y más de 50 victorias en la carreras del esquiador austríaco más ganador de la historia.
En el sector femenino son incontables las figuras que han dominado este deporte a nivel mundial a lo largo de los años. Tuve la oportunidad de ver muy de cerca participar a una de las figuras legendarias de este deporte: la croata Janica Kostelic, seis medallas olímpicas, cinco mundiales, tres copas del mundo. victorias en todas las disciplinas desde el eslalon hasta el Super-G, pasando por descenso y combinada.
Los países escandinavos como Finlandia, Suecia, Noruega y también Rusia son los dueños indiscutidos de la mayor parte de los trofeos en Esquí de Fondo.
Italia también tiene lo suyo y aporta al medallero, así como Alemania y Francia mientras que en América se destacan EE. UU. y Canadá.
Campeones como los italianos Alberto Tomba y Deborah Compagnoni, los hermanos suizos Zurbriggen junto a Michael von Grüningen, el luxemburgués Marc Ghirardelli, el noruego Lasse Kjus figura destacada no solo en las pruebas veloces sino también en las combinadas y Super-G junto a su connacional Kjetil Andre Aamodt uno de los mayores especialistas en el esquí de fondo, todos son solo la punta del iceberg, una pléyade en el esquí de la cuál me iré ocupando en este 2022, tratando de incorporar una nueva disciplina en este comunidad deportiva.
Un hermoso deporte que a veces he tenido el privilegio de disfrutar desde el borde de la pista viendo desde muy cerca a estos auténticos campeones, mientras que otras veces los he visto desde la TV en las transmisiones que regularmente domingo a domingo antes del mediodía hacía la RAI desde todas las pistas europeas donde se practicaba este deporte.
Un deporte que, a diferencia de otros en los que cuando se extinguen -en el sentido de la práctica- las grandes figuras no siempre son reemplazadas en seguida por nuevos deportistas con capacidades similares.
El esquí, especialmente europeo, es una máquina de generar nuevas y continuas estrellas en el firmamento blanco.
Tal vez ya no están aquellas figuras que conocí y vi de cerca pero no por eso este deporte ha perdido impulso, poder de atracción ni ha dejado de generar nuevos deportistas de relieve mundial.
Iré analizando con todos los @hivers de @fulldeportes las disciplinas que conforman este deporte, los campeones de ayer, de hoy y de siempre.

Perhaps the stars I knew and saw up close are no longer around, but that does not mean that the sport has lost momentum, lost its power of attraction or stopped producing new world-class sportsmen and women.
