Acaba de finalizar la penúltima carrera de la Fórmula Uno del año en el magníficamente presentado circuito de Lusail.
Estoy anonadado.
No puedo entender, no me entra en la cabeza lo que hicieron desde el área de estrategia del equipo de Woking; luego de los entrenamientos, carrera Sprint y clasificación no tenía la menor duda de que los McLaren se impondrían y Max Verstappen quedaría fuera de la lucha por el campeonato. No ocurrió.
Lo que si ocurrió fue un error incomprensible: luego del ingreso del auto de seguridad por el feo toque entre Nico Hulkemberg y Pierre Gasly que dejó al primero fuera de carrera y al segundo con el auto severamente dañado, todo el mundo ingresó a boxes a realizar el primer cambio obligado de neumáticos; todo el mundo menos los vehículos de color papaya que siguieron en pista y perdieron no solamente la ventaja que tenían respecto al neerlandes de Red Bull sino que también quedó como resabio de esa error la pesada carga de la parada obligatoria antes de cumplir 25 vueltas con el neumático con el que salieron.
Orden ridícula de la FIA es de realizar dos cambios obligatorios de neumáticos y no dar más de 25 giros con el mismo. Según dicen, el pretexto fue la seguridad; sin embargo, todos sabemos que el objetivo era darle un poco más de emoción a una carrera que se suponía aburrida debido a las escasas posibilidades de sobrepaso que existen en el circuito con una recta corta y un solo sector de DRS. Un parche para tratar de mejorar el espectáculo en un circuito por demás aburrido que solo se mantiene en la parrilla por la fuerza de los petrodólares.
De nada sirvió la orden del equipo puntero del campeonato de que sus pilotos trataran de acumular ventajas, ambos vehículos hicieron lo que pudieron, pero el zorro viejo de Verstappen no se apuró, sabía perfectamente que la ventaja estaba de su parte y no había necesidad de arriesgar tratando de seguirlos, se contentó con mantenerse a unos 9 segundos de la punta sin arriesgar alguna salida de pista que pudiera dañar su fondo plano o desgastar excesivamente sus neumáticos.
Y de esa manera sucedió lo que nadie esperaba, Max ganó una carrera que no pensaba y se puso a tiro del campeonato estirando la definición hasta la última cita de la semana próxima.
Méritos de Verstappen seguro pero error incomprensible de McLaren también y si pudiéramos pesar en una balanza que influyó más en el resultado seguramente confirmaríamos que la decisión de no haber parado en la vuelta 8 definió el pleito en favor de Red Bull.
No me gustaría en estos momentos estar en los zapatos del estratega que tomó la decisión. Imperdonable.
Los aficionados de parabienes, 3 pilotos siguen con posibilidades de ganar el título de campeón de pilotos y uno de ellos tiene la moral por las nubes, sabemos de quién se trata. Los errores de Mclaren en este último tramo del torneo van más allá de cualquier comprensión y nada indica que esta seguidilla tenga remedio.
En una semana sabremos más.
Our own merits and the mistakes of others
The penultimate Formula One race of the year has just finished at the magnificent Lusail circuit.
I'm stunned.
I can't understand, I just can't wrap my head around what the strategy department at Woking did; after practice, the Sprint race, and qualifying, I did not doubt that the McLarens would win and Max Verstappen would be out of the championship fight. It didn't happen.
What did happen was an incomprehensible mistake: after the safety car came out due to the nasty collision between Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly, which took Hulkenberg out of the race and left Gasly with a severely damaged car, everyone pitted for their first mandatory tire change; everyone except the papaya-colored cars, which stayed out on track and lost not only the advantage they had over the Dutchman in the Red Bull, but also suffered the heavy burden of the mandatory pit stop before completing 25 laps on the tires they started on.
That ridiculous FIA order requiring two mandatory tire changes and a maximum of 25 laps on the same tire was a real pain. They claim the pretext was safety, but we all know the real objective was to inject a bit more excitement into a race that was supposed to be boring due to the limited overtaking opportunities on a circuit with a short straight and only one DRS zone. A band-aid solution to try and improve the spectacle on an otherwise dull circuit that only stays on the grid thanks to petrodollars.
The championship-leading team's order for their drivers to try and build a lead was useless. Both cars did what they could, but the wily Verstappen wasn't in any hurry. He knew perfectly well that the advantage was his and there was no need to risk trying to keep up. He was content to stay about 9 seconds behind the leader, avoiding any risk of going off the track that could damage his floor or excessively wear out his tires.
And so, the unexpected happened: Max won a race he hadn't anticipated and put himself within striking distance of the championship, extending the title race to the final race next week.
Verstappen certainly deserves credit, but McLaren's error is also incomprehensible, and if we could weigh the factors that most influenced the outcome, we would surely confirm that the decision not to pit on lap 8 decided the race in favor of Red Bull.
I wouldn't want to be in the shoes of the strategist who made that decision right now. Unforgivable.
Fans can rejoice: three drivers still have a chance to win the drivers' championship, and one of them is riding high—we know who it is. McLaren's mistakes in this final stretch of the season are beyond comprehension, and there's no indication that this string of errors will be reversed.

Las Papayas Rules son lo peor que la ha podido pasar a la F1. Y honestamente le digo, ojala gane el campeonato Verstappen. El manejo de McLaren, en todos los sentidos, esta temporada ha sido lamentable.

No soy experta en este deporte, pero por lo que he leído y visto en un programa que trasmite la televisión cubana los martes a las 7 de la tarde pensé que a estas alturas ya McLaren habría ganado, pero no.
