Borna Coric "Contundente". // ATP Winston Salem. [Esp + Eng]

Mientras se disputan los partidos clasificatorios para el US Open, se desarrolla en las pistas del Wake Forest University el último torneo de la seríe previa al cuarto Grand Slam del año; y se trata de la edición N° 54 del ATP-250 de Winston Salem en Carolina del Norte, un evento al que este año llegó como primer sembrado el croata Borna Coric. Luego de un reñido duelo contra el australiano Rinky Hijikata, el reconocido guerrero balcánico se enfrentó ayer al estadounidense Michael Mmoh, en un cerrado choque de portentos del forehand y como es costumbre, compartiré mis impresiones sobre este partido correspondiente a los 8vos de final del mencionado certamen.

While the qualifying matches for the US Open are being played, the last tournament of the series prior to the fourth Grand Slam of the year takes place on the courts of Wake Forest University; and it is the 54th edition of the ATP-250 in Winston Salem in North Carolina, an event that this year saw the Croatian Borna Coric as the first seed. After a hard-fought duel against the Australian Rinky Hijikata, the renowned Balkan warrior faced the American Michael Mmoh yesterday, in a close clash of forehand marvels and as usual, I will share my impressions about this match corresponding to the 8th final of the aforementioned contest.

Era un enfrentamiento prometedor, más que por la diferencia de ranking (Coric 29 y Mmoh 94), se trata de dos contendientes a los que rara vez se les ve disminuir el ritmo de ataque, nunca bajan los brazos y aplican mucha potencia a su juego. Michael venía de superar a su compatriota Marcos Giron con un cierre rotundo sobre la red; y siempre nos regala partidos en los que muestra valentía y un drive marcado por su empuñadura presta para el top spin, además de la singular manera de sujetar la raqueta al estar. Es un jugador diferente al resto y les recomiendo vean alguno de sus encuentros.

It was a promising matchup, more than because of the difference in ranking (Coric 29 and Mmoh 94), these are two contenders who rarely slow down their attacking pace, never give up and apply a lot of power to their game . . Michael came from beating his compatriot Marcos Girón with a resounding closing over the net; and he always gives us matches in which he shows courage and a drive marked by his grip ready for the top spin, in addition to the unique way of holding the racket when standing. He is a different player from the rest and I recommend that you watch some of his matches.

Los primeros games estuvieron de feria, con ambos atletas a punto de quebrar, pero también esforzándose para sostener su servicio. La diferencia y el primer golpe del set lo daba Borna, que siempre presto al ataque veloz hacia la paralela, acertó 2 puntos vitales (no sin antes plantear rallys complicados). Algo distinto que hizo Coric, respecto a su partido anterior, fue el uso de las voleas cortas. Creo que fue un ajuste muy positivo, dado que se estaba limitando solo a atacar perimetralmente y ante rivales de estilo parecido, debes implementar variantes que los descoloquen en la pista. Entonces fue un break al 9no game que lo puso a sacar para llevarse el set y así lo cumplió por 6-4.

The first games were fair, with both athletes on the verge of bankruptcy, but also struggling to hold their serve. The difference and the first blow of the set was given by Borna, who always lends himself to the fast attack towards the parallel, hit 2 vital points (but not before raising complicated rallies). Something different that Coric did, compared to his previous match, was the use of short volleys. I think it was a very positive adjustment, since he was limiting himself to only attacking the perimeter and against opponents of a similar style, you have to implement variations that throw them off the court. Then it was a break in the 9th game that made him serve to take the set and he did so 6-4.

Aunque Borna y Michael son muy buenos sacadores en fuerza, Coric aplicó mejor su estrategia de cambio de velocidad, además siempre le fue bien en distancia abierta para atacar al 3er golpe (siempre lo usa y le sale bien). Sin embargo, en la segunda manga no generaron oportunidades de quiebre a pesar del planteamiento "palo a palo", Mmoh sorprendió con sus dejadas al contrapié y en el tie break coronó seguidillas de 3 y 2 puntos respectivamente; así pudo igualar con un 7;6(3) que daba continuidad al espectáculo. Pero en la tercera y definitiva vuelta, la balanza se fue inclinando en favor de la experiencia y el roce competitivo que ostenta el croata, recién campeón en la copa Hopman.

Although Borna and Michael are very good strength servers, Coric applied his change-up strategy better, also he always did well in open distance to attack the 3rd shot (he always uses it and it works well). However, in the second set they did not generate break opportunities despite the "stick to stick" approach, Mmoh surprised with his shots off the mark and in the tie break he crowned runs of 3 and 2 points respectively; thus he was able to equalize with a 7;6(3) that gave continuity to the show. But in the third and final round, the balance tipped in favor of the experience and competitive touch of the Croatian, recently champion in the Hopman Cup.

Borna pillaría con una rotura al 2do game, cuando ví en la transmisión el lamento de Michael, me dió la impresión de que tuvo un parpadeo y en su descuido pagó el precio con ese error mental. Y pensar que fue Coric quien protagonizó un extraño momento hace una semanas, cuando olvidó el conteo y no advertía que ya había ganado el partido ja,ja,ja. El tenista estadounidense logró retomar el tren de ataque pero pese a sus esfuerzos, no pudo recuperar el quiebre y terminó sucumbiendo por 6-3 en 2 horas y 47 minutos de batalla. Coric cerraría con un ataque al 3er golpe, en carrera hacia adelante y esta combinación le dió muy buenos resultados ayer.

Borna would catch the second game with a break, when I saw Michael's regret on the broadcast, it gave me the impression that he blinked and in his carelessness he paid the price with that mental error. And to think that it was Coric who starred in a strange moment a few weeks ago, when he forgot the count and did not realize that he had already won the game ha ha ha. The American tennis player managed to resume the attack train but despite his efforts, he could not recover the break and ended up succumbing 6-3 in 2 hours and 47 minutes of battle. Coric would close with an attack on the 3rd stroke, in a forward run and this combination gave him very good results yesterday.

Borna Coric va contra el argentino Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, Richard Gasquet y Sebastian Korda (último estadounidense en competencia), Jiri Lehecka vs Max Purcell y Laslo Djere ante Sebastián Báez.
