To be honest, I had my fair share of worries.
Despite how it might look great and everything, I still have this question in the back of my mind, “Have I really been helping hive grow or the kind of user I am approaching is just not the market?” Though clearly, I did my research and we’re a great place to be. I mean, Hive is listed everywhere around here and the industry is growing. That’s why, after the event when I was asked to fill in a free class about writing and given one more chance to talk about Hive, I hesitated a bit.
“Have I really been helping hive grow or the kind of user I am approaching is just not the actual market?”
I ruminate over the idea that Hive is massive and there are various expectations around here. I was going to talk in front of strangers who might not be aware of the etiquettes around Hive.
It has always been a long journey. It’s like guiding someone who is lost in the middle of nowhere and can’t quite figure out the darkness around them. It's a tough job. I don’t know how other onboarders did it though but props to them. It’s a long journey and hard work.
And I don’t know about everyone but my goal has been trying to introduce this space to the people who aren’t aware of all this. This place could expose them to the world that they might have not been exposed to.
Since this talk was a free class about writing and mostly about building an online portfolio, how to find freelance clients, etc, Hive was the side dish of it all. The main course was a while back. So, I was trying to bridge hive as a way for people to build their online portfolio and exercise their writing or find their community.
A diverse range of participants…
This class was conducted after the event back in January. There are a diverse range of people who came to the class.
There people who previously joined the online or offline event, got an account, wanted to know more about hive. There are people who are new to this all and want to learn how to actually write in English and how I can help them fix some of their common mistakes and point out their errors as an ESL. Some of the topics that I covered are in this presentation.
I am sorry my english is bad....
I got some funny response from this image here. What do you think is the english word for this just based on the image?
These are some of the tools that I listed (more spoken)
We're getting there....
I even raise awareness about scams. There are many scams around SEA offering remote job opportunity and I shared what to look for in scams.
Honestly, creating content on hive is a great way to stand out when compared to these facebook and youtube
What not to do on hive
Let's stop for a bit for this generic warning
The event was successfully conducted back in February. It was almost an hour-long session with me where this was the topic that I tried to cover.
I even asked for some feedback using snaps for some of my presentations in the spirit of transparency and again, I want to streamline the expectations and message when it comes to hive.
From the event itself, I saw 88 feedback. That’s quite a big number and I was pretty surprised that they would spend time listening to me about hive and a little fraction of the things I know. After the event, I received a sheet filled with some critiques and recommendations. Let me share some of them with you. As much as a lot of them said it's interesting and exciting,
One person said it's boring 🤣 & I just classify this as disaster, ignoring all the people that said, " it's interesting" and something new to them.
Let’s be honest, I lose sleep over it. I read everything and for someone who used to chase perfection, one boring comment means it's a disaster. I couldn’t really accept that at least 88% people actually like it. There are people want this to be longer or that I need to do another demo while at the time, time was quite an issue.
“ Hello hive” is actually a scary thing to write…
It’s not easy as ABC to actually create an account on hive. There are some steps before we could finally write that piece of “Hello Hive”. Then the rest is, let the universe decide. You either receive a warm welcome or a downvote or nothing at all.
When you’re overly excited about a shiny new thing, you can overlook some certain stuff. I can’t expect anyone that comes to the talk to understand every single etiquette especially in a new place. I told people not to be afraid of trying new things even if that is pretty scary.
Among those 88 people that gave the response to the talk and fill out the form, just a few of them stuck around. I don’t know if some of them created an account after that cause I just gave them some guides that were previously handed out online and offline from the previous event. So, who knows? Let’s hope they will finally find their way around here again.
Also, for the sake of transparency, we had some leftovers for the merchandise and @menulisid team is holding a charity this month in an orphanage. They were asking if some of those merchandise mostly keychain, pen and stickers can be distributed there and I said yes.
Will I ever do this kind of talk or share stuff about Hive to random strangers? Well.. I need some time to be convinced. I also shared the picture way back on #snap before even writing out the details of this.
That person was bored? How rude! And lazy. Don't worry about them.
In England, the big thing that people will get upset about in the feedback is whether the biscuits provided with the refreshments were okay.
The presentation looked great and you have years of hands on Hive experience behind you. On-boarding is tough, you can't tell people everything they need to know in a presentation, and some things people have to learn for themselves even when you have told them.
I didn't know about your father, I was sorry to hear. Look after yourself.
🤣 Honestly, we care about this stuff too and would comment on it.Thankfully for our offline event, it was up to par.
It took me a while to be have some energy to compile this and being active. The funeral and memorial here are pretty long and I used up my energy for it. Talk about meeting 40-60 people a day for 7 days straight. Much love to you and I hope Sunday is treating you well ❤️

Onboarding is hard and "discovering" gems among people is even harder... So, if your onboard ratio is more than 5%, you made it! I suck at onboarding and I have no idea where I would even begin, but I know that not everyone is successful in what it's doing... So, in your place, I wouldn't be discouraged by negative people, but rather focus on those few who are worth your time...

To actually onboard someone unique, those who post without "a template" is challenging.
I've seen that some people around here post with some type of templates when they're onboarded by someone. It's not my goal and it has been really challenging given than well, some standards from around here usually isn't the same as out there. ( I never work here locally and because this event, I learned something new). As much as some are common sense there are some of the things that are still vague, like pictures sourcing etc.
I tend to be slight perfectionist haha and it's a character flaw I am trying to improve. You know, maybe sometimes good enough is good enough.
What irritates me the most is the lack of "common sense"... If I have to explain to someone that you have to appreciate the person who came to your post and spent some time on it, I snap and can't continue... lol... Or the question: "Do I have to reply on the comment from my post?" Like... wtf? Why would you even ask that question... 😃
I suppose because of all those reasons, I suck on onboarding... 😂
As I think that I'm in your "band" of perfectionists, I don't have any high expectations of newbies... Rewarding the effort and a good attitude is a good start, I suppose... We all have room for growth... that's the point to be better every next day...
I call this a hell of a journey - success in the real world.
It took a while and long before I was able to compile this. Happy to add some more exposure to hive 😊
You've never heard it from me, but know that I've always known how good of a community members you've been all these years.
#hive #posh
Don’t stop. Maybe soon, you’ll reach the right market
