Is it okay to post D&D adventures and background ?

in Tabletop / DND3 years ago

This isn't really a post, it's more of a question to the community.

Would anyone be interested if I posted Dungeons & Dragons content in here ? I'm thinking in terms of dungeons and adventures I've run, as well as background material, NPC's, customised monsters etc. that could be imported into readers' own worlds.

It would naturally incorporate some things from the published rules, but the intention is not to treat on copyright toes; I see it as inevitable that things written for a D&D game are going to have to be compatible with the rules (e.g. using standard monsters, spells etc from the game).

I've been running a homebrew world for around 40 years now, so I've got a vast amount of background material, lore, adventures etc. It started off as AD&D, then 2nd Edition. More recently I've been running a mix of 3.5 and 5th Edition. Having two different rulesets in operation simultaneously for different groups of players isn't too bad as long as they are in different bits of the world and never meet ! Most of the background material is descriptive and fluffy, for example, some key NPC's are just described as "always 5 levels higher than the party".

Putting some of this world out to a wider audience feels like a nice thing to do, and could come in useful if you want to incorporate it into your own games. Plus I'll be honest if people like it, it's good for my ego ! Or if people don't like it, it's a good way to gain constructive criticism so I can improve what I'm creating.

What do you think ?

Well, it doesn't go against any rules as far as I can tell. I'd do it till someone says otherwise, but that's me. I'm a rebel. 🤓

Go for it. Sharing new adventure hooks is always helpful to other DMs.

Personally, I prefer non-D&D content, because we see D&D everywhere already. But still, if you want to do that, I think you should try. But you should be careful about sharing paid content, since D&D doesn't care about intention much.

Hi Shatargat - thanks for the feedback :) I understand about the paid content, which is why I'd edit it to cut out anything that wasn't in the SRD. But perhaps the answer is to post generically-usable background material more than pure D&D dungeons.

It's always good to see RPG content around :)
