I think one of the reasons would be because it is like a safe place for you, you get to interact with like minded people and feel at home.

It is indeed uncomfortable when someone watches you while you eat. I find that I am not able to consume the food well when being watch. However, there's this pleasure or joy that comes with watching the ones you love eat or just watching people consume food with so much contentment.

I agree with you on this, once in a while it is good to disconnect, take a break and enjoy the things around you, spend more time with the ones you love.
