Settle down!!

in BDCommunity4 years ago

I grew up in a society where everyone says to a girl, "settle down". No one will ever say, stand out and make your path. It's okay if they don't say that. But the judgment, social punishment that comes with this is enormous. Not everyone can bear that.

Ah...I know so many women from my relatives to friends, they give up, they settle down. I। Mena I have no clash if anyone loves to settle down. But who doesn't want that, forcing that person is a sin.

Need example?

I can remember I brought a pair of skating shoes with my first scholarship money after five grade. Our society is not yet ready to see a girl skating along. And think about what the reaction was 20 years ago! I had to quit, it was more than the social pressure than my family pressure. Still, this aches my heart.

This is just a silly example. There are so many other major examples I can give from my life. Think what the number will be if every woman comes with their own struggle stories!!

Settle down, don't talk, never argue, obey your man...

Social values, cultural perspective, and religion - when all this influences a woman's life; she doesn't have many places to go rather settle down.

I'm not misjudging those who are not working women, please don't get me wrong. There's nothing more beautiful than having a family. But when a woman has to sacrifice so many things, can't even talk for herself, can't spend a penny for her care. That's what bothers me. Also, I know men have different struggles. As a woman, I can only talk about my story, right.

As a mom of a boy, I sometimes feel blessed that he doesn't have to go through the same struggle. Yes, a boy also has to struggle, in different ways. But again, I think what I'm doing/teaching him so he can never say to a woman to settle down rather make the path of any woman to walk on.

Huh...miles to go before I sleep...

Nice thought, telling women's to settle down, as if that alone is what. Women's was design for is bad, meanwhile some women out there can performed more than men

I wish everyone could understand these ways. Like we can't go forward cutting half of the society.
Thanks for your words.

With time, people would came to understand this fact, thank you too and you are welcome

They teach you to stand up. They teach you to walk. They teach you to speak. Later they say sit down and shut up. This is the society nowadays.

You got it right. And this is not just true in my part of the world but everywhere. A quiet woman means she is doing great.

Telling a woman that all she has to do in her life is settle down was the way of the past. In a more civilized world like today, that shouldn't be the case.

I remember back in those days where women were made to believe that going to the University and having a career were meant for men only.. Those things no longer exist and every woman should be able to choose for herself what she wants to do with her life.

And if you look at it, not every woman wants to get married, they just want to live their lives the way they want it and that is perfectly fine as long as it makes them happy.

Your happiness should always come first. I can only imagine how bad you felt having to quit skating just because of what the people around were saying. That is just so sad.

Those things no longer exist.
Ah, I wish that would be true. Not in rural areas but in urban places of Bangladesh, I can give you hundreds of examples where society made women compromise. It's a culture, it's a mindset. It will take another few hundred years to change.

Wow, that's just so sad.

To me, settling down and prolly being tied down isn't my thing. I love being free, I love being creative, chasing my dreams and doing what I love and if anything or anyone should try to stop me, it's more like a feeling of being in prison.

I wish you could be that way forever.
Good luck.

Thank you so much. I'll actually work my chances.
