but I think I know another word which suits them better, tho its a ZOroastrian termin and persian language, not an English at all. have you ever heard about the hravstra ?.. it will be hard to describe neatly what is it... but moskitos and midges are definitely, hravstra!
in Zoroastrian conception, Ahriman (analog of Lucifer, lets simplify so) created the bad things to spoil the humans the good side of life, as hravstra is one of them. on the casual level, 'hravstra' are the moths, moskitos, rodents, and especially reptiles, snakes, etc.
this is a good definition I found, in Russian:
Храфстра - (зенд. "вредный") - это яростные и вредоносные духи, представленные в виде земных насекомых, жаб, змей, хищных птиц, волков и прочих существ, порожденные Ангро-Майнью (именно поэтому религиозный закон предписывает уничтожать их). «Вредные» животные в системе зороастрийского дуализма, противостоят благим, «ахуровским», животным.
