I reached Delhi after a long time and my first strange encounter has been with a guy selling dream catcher. I never seen them before, but the colorful featherly appearance made me to enquire about it. This is what makes a village boy ignorant about the fast changing lifestyle. It took me a little conversation with the guy who selling the artefacts to understand the basic prirnciple of what looking as decorative article.
A dream catcher, consists of a hoop with a woven web inside, often decorated with beads and feathers, and is traditionally hung over a bed to catch bad dreams while allowing good dreams to pass through to the sleeper. This is what told to me, which is very strange to me as I never heard of this before. Something to get rid of the bad dreams sounds interesting. The guy carrying multiple colourful dream catcher hanging with a wooden stick. So many of them does looks attractive. If I ever see a good dream, i alwsys cherish that while any bad i like to forget.
The concept of Dream catchers were originated with the Ojibwe (Anishinaabe) people as a "spider web charm" to protect infants from nightmares. The concept has since been adopted by other nations. One thing is noticeable that each of them were in circular shape. Neither traingle nor square. The circular hoop represents the circle of life, and the web symbolizes a spider's web. The article in a very interesting manner. Bad dreams are caught in the web and disappear with the morning sun, while good dreams are filtered through the hole in the center and descend to the sleeper via the feathers.
Today, many people use dream catchers as a decorative item or a symbol of spiritual protection and positive energy, even if they are not part of the traditional cultures they originated from. It reminded me of wind-chimes which get popular very fast and then faded rapidly. This new items is unique and interesting, I never used it, but the way the guy is selling them, I am pretty sure the modern lifestyle has already make way for its adoption. However, there is a catch, traditionally, they should be gifted rather than purchased, and made with natural materials like willow wood.
But I was wondering, what the sizes have to do? The guy has multiple sizes , does the bigger one os better than the smaller one. Not sure let me know in case you are aware of these dream catcher.
In good faith - Peace!!
I actually live very close to a couple of Ojibwe tribes. They have a big celebration every year on their land. It's pretty impressive. I can't tell you what the size difference means, but we have an abundance of dream catcher's around my area.
