Nobody ever expects their invitation to The Gates challenge. Mostly because nobody has ever signed up for it. Emily was in an absolute stupor when her friend Zayne walked through her door and showed her the transparent tablet.
“Found it this morning. It was shoved under my door some time overnight,” Zayne said as Emily finally took the tablet from him. “I can’t believe it! What are the chances?”
Emily studied what was on the screen intently. YOU HAVE BEEN CHOSEN AS THE NEXT CONTESTANT FOR THE GATES. Her lips moved as she read the words.
“I mean, come on Emily. We’ve talked about this since we were kids!” Zayne said as he started to pace the room. “You always said we’d be better off playing the lottery an dreaming about that instead.”
BRING ONLY YOUR AUGMENTATIONS AND ENHANCEMENTS TO LEVEL -3. GO TO SECTOR D-41 AND ENTER THE GATE. YOU ARE ALLOWED ONE COMPANION.
“And you get to come with me!” Zayne said, stopping in front of Emily and vibrating with excitement.
“Sector D-41,” Emily whispered to herself. “Haven’t we been there before? Wait, what? You’re taking me with you?”
“Well, yeah, of course, Em.” Zayne said, running his skeletal hand through his short buzzed hair. The slight lubricant on his augmentation caused his hair to stand straight up.
“You’re not going to take Amber?” Emily asked as she handed the transparent tablet back to Zayne.
“She doesn’t believe in The Gates. So her loos.” Zayne said with a chuckle as he read the ticket aloud yet again, before adding; “Plus, I always said I’d take you with me if I got a ticket.”
“Gonna be honest, Zayne, always thought you were saying that to get into my pants.” Emily said, standing from her chair and punching Zayne lightly on the shoulder. It made an audible metallic ping. “Oh, shit. You got the shoulder enhancement done? Also, ow!”
“Pfft. You know I think of you as a sister, Em.” Zayne said.
“Not when you were eighteen!” Emily quickly interjected before he could continue.
“Hey, fuck you! Those RGB leg enhancements you had were hot.” Zayne said with a laugh before removing his shirt to show off the new augmentation to his best friend. “And yep. Finnigan did it for me after that score I made hijacking that data bug n the Super Fresh network. Larger rations for decks 5 through 16 as well!”
“How the fuck did you pull that off?”
Zayne pulled his vape out of his breast pocket and took a deep pill then blew a smoke ring at Emily and smiled.
This story was inspired by a different contest on Hive relating to NFT Showroom. I won an NFT by writing a little scene to go along with the picture and now it's becoming its own thing. 😁 It's been in the works for about half a month and this is the perfect exercise to start the novel! I have lots of worldbuilding notes to provide in future updates in between the weekly challenges.
