The Frog Splash

Back when I was actively following WWE, I remember that one of the most popular wrestling maneuvers that we wanted to pull off was the frog splash. Whether you are in the corner of the bed or on the edge of a swimming pool, all you have to do is leap with all your might, try to bend your arms and legs inwards, (which is really hard to do) then stretch and smack flat whoever is unlucky enough to be on the receiving end.

And being a fan during the Ruthless Aggression era, I always associated the Frog Splash with either Eddie Guerrero or Rob Van Dam. And while watching compilation videos of both wrestlers doing Frog Splash, I noticed a key difference between the two. RVD's execution has him bouncing off the enemy wrestler upon impact followed by a very visible display of abdominal pain as he hunches forward in agony and tries to slowly crawl and make a cover.

This had me thinking that Frog Splash might really be a very painful maneuver especially when you account for the height of the top turnbuckle they were jumping from. I can only speculate but I wouldn't be surprised if some wrestlers end up with bruised abdoments or even broken ribs.

But Eddie Guerrero's execution of the move was a bit different. It's somewhat more precise as he lands perfectly on top of opponent without bouncing off. He also immediately proceeds to make a cover in majority of the time. There are some videos where you can see that Eddie also hunches in pain but it's not as frequent as RVD. So I'm thinking that it's either Eddie does the Frog Splash in such as way he sustains minimal injuries or he's just so badass that he withstands the pain of the impact and doesn't react until the match is over.

Either way, the Frog Splash is one of the most climactic finishers to a match. To me, it's more believable for a wrestler to not be able to kick out of a Frog Splash than when getting hit by an F5 or Attitude Adjustment. And despite the countless PSAs during commercial breaks, we tried the heck out of it at home.
