Entre mangos, bucares y reflexiones

Era una mañana de esas que son bien típicas del mes de abril, muy calurosa en la parcela allá en Paso Real de Macaira en Guárico de nuestro llano venezolano. Mi suegra Cándida había hecho café, así que salí con mi cafecito negro en mano, buscando el aire fresco bajo la mata de mamon y la mata de mangos que rodean el patio de la casa de mi suegra. Mientras caminaba, algo me llamó la atención: dos nidos colgaban firmes de las ramas de un árbol frondoso. Parecía una obra de arte hecha con paciencia, siempre me he preguntado como estas aves pueden hacer esos tejidos que hace la gente en Los Andes, pero en miniatura y colgando del aire.

Me acerqué despacito, porque no quería espantar a ningún pajarito. Uno de los nidos tenía un huequito que dejaba ver un poco de su interior. Me imaginé algún pichón guindado allá adentro, esperando que la mamá llegara con comida. Las ramas estaban cargadas de esas vainas marrones que el bucare suelta, y el contraste con las hojas verdes era tan bonito que me quedé mirándolo un buen rato.

Recordé a mi Carlos, que siempre me decía que los pájaros tejedores son maestros en el arte de construir nidos. Pensé en cómo esas aves le dedican tiempo y esfuerzo a su refugio, sin apuro, creando algo útil y bello a la vez. Y me dio por reflexionar sobre mi propia vida, las cosas que construimos los hombres día a día.

No sé cuánto rato pasé allí, y por supuesto que tome la foto para el concurso, pero cuando volví a la casa, me sentía tranquilo, como si esos nidos me hubieran enseñado una lección: con dedicación y paciencia, todo lo que hagamos puede ser una obra maestra.

Between mangoes, buckthorns and reflections

It was one of those mornings typical of April, very hot on the farm out in Paso Real de Macaira in Guárico, part of our Venezuelan plains. My mother-in-law, Cándida, had made coffee, so I stepped outside with my cup of black coffee in hand, looking for some fresh air under the mamón and mango trees that surrounded the yard of my mother-in-law's house. While I was walking, something caught my eye: two nests hung firmly from the branches of a leafy tree. They seemed like works of art made with patience. I've always wondered how these birds manage to create those weavings that people from Los Andes make, but in miniature and hanging in midair.

I moved closer slowly because I didn’t want to scare away any little birds. One of the nests had a small opening that let me peek inside a little. I imagined some tiny chick hanging in there, waiting for its mother to arrive with food. The branches were laden with those brown pods that the bucare tree drops, and the contrast with the green leaves was so beautiful that I stayed there admiring it for quite a while.

I remembered Carlos, who always told me that the weaver birds are masters in the art of building nests. I thought about how these birds dedicate time and effort to their shelter, without rush, creating something both useful and beautiful. And it got me reflecting on my own life, the things we men build day by day.

I don’t know how long I spent there, and of course, I took the photo for the contest, but when I went back to the house, I felt at peace, as if those nests had taught me a lesson: with dedication and patience, everything we create can be a masterpiece.
