Verano Monumental Cemetery - Rome

Last Sunday I was in Rome and visited an unusual but very interesting place, the famous Verano monumental cemetery. I had heard about it and read about it, but in real life it was a very meaningful experience for me.

It is a real open-air museum covering an area of 83 hectares with a monumental entrance with four large statues in front, designed by Valadier, one of the greatest architects of the 19th century.

In order from left to right, Meditation, Hope, Charity and Silence.

The Verano cemetery was built after the Napoleonic edict of Saint Cloud in 1804, which obliged cemeteries to be built outside city walls. Thus construction began in 1805 and ended in 1880.

The cemetery possesses a priceless heritage of works of art consisting of thousands of tombs in Classical, Renaissance, Baroque and Modern styles.
There are also hundreds of marble and bronze sculptures by famous artists that reveal the great care and expertise in choosing the works to be placed in the monumental complex.

Such an architectural and urban layout is incomparable to any other cemetery in the world, which is why the municipality of Rome organises guided tours for tourists.

Cimitero monumentale del Verano - Roma

Domenica scorsa sono stato a Roma ed ho visitato un luogo insolito ma molto interessante, il famoso cimitero monumentale del Verano. Ne avevo sentito parlare ed avevo letto qualcosa a riguardo ma dal vero è stata un'esperienza molto significativa per me. Si tratta di un vero e proprio museo a cielo aperto che si sviluppa su un'area di 83 ettari con un ingresso monumentale con quattro grandi statue davanti. In ordine da sinistra verso destra, la Meditazione, la Speranza, la Carità e il Silenzio. Il cimitero del Verano viene costruito dopo l'editto napoleonico di Saint Cloud del 1804 che obbligava di edificare i cimiteri al di fuori le mura delle città. Quindi la costruzione parte dal 1805 e termina nel 1880.

Il cimitero possiede un patrimonio inestimabile di opere d'arte composto migliaia di tombe dallo stile Classico, Rinascimentale, Barocco e Moderno.
Sono presenti anche centinaia di sculture in marmo e bronzo di artisti famosi che rivelano la grande cura e perizia nello scegliere le opere da inseire nel complesso monumentale. Un impianto architettonico e urbanistico di questo tipo è incomparabile a nessun altro cimitero al mondo e per questo motivo il comune di Roma organizza visite guidate per i turisti.
