DRIVING THROUGH THE SUMMER RAIN

in Discovery-it3 years ago (edited)

Rain is a rare occurrence in July and August here where I live, on the southern cape of the Istra peninsula. Less than ten kilometers north of my hometown, a bit of summer rain has arrived in the last thirty days or so, but in the area around Medulin, the sky is always clear and blue, and the grass is brown & dry.

A couple of weeks ago I went driving around to get a bit of rain for the body and soul.

The weather was hot and sunny in Medulin at 10 AM, when I left my house, but distant dark clouds were hanging along the north-western stretch of the horizon. Fifteen minutes later and a little less than twenty kilometers further, on the outskirts of the village called Marchana, the layer of clouds was almost above me and I felt a few sparse drops of rain while taking the above photograph.

Six or seven kilometers further, when I reached the small town called Vodnjan, it was raining properly, and some minutes later, on the outskirts of the same town, the rain started getting really heavy. A downpour followed me on the road to Svetvinchenat, another small town, about fifteen kilometers north of Vodnjan. In the following video, you can travel with me, accompanied by the heavy rain. Have a good viewing.

I was driving around the area about ten to twenty kilometers from my hometown and I record a few short fragments of footage along the way. This short video isn't very interesting as a standalone thing, but in combination with the text & photographs of the longer, more elaborate post on Hive, it looks better and it makes more sense. The music is some lovely free-to-use stuff I found on Pixabay.

After I don't know how many minutes of slow driving northwards and a stop by the side of the road to record a bit of footage and take a shot or two, I took a narrow country lane that leads to the village of Chabrunichi. I was a couple of kilometers from Svetvinchenat at that point, and this was the furthest I got from home that day. In the above photograph, you can see the bus station on the outskirts of the village, about half a kilometer from the center.

Here you can see a memorial, that looks a bit like some kind of altar, dedicated to the local priest that was beatified by the Vatican in 2013. He was born in 1920 and died in 1947. Today, while preparing this post, I learned that the priest - who may be a saint in the future, has lost his life in the tumultuous post-war years when the Communist party was leading a covert war with the religion for the hegemony over the minds and souls of the local population.

A friend who was there with me has a cool Meteo - application on her iPhone. Is called Radar, and that thing can show you the changes and movements of weather in real time. Here we were watching how the storm is enveloping the entire region but leaving the narrow coastal strip of the most southern area around my hometown unaffected by the rainy weather.

On the way back home, I stopped at the large parking lot half a kilometer from Vodnjan ...

... to photograph these relatively old apartment buildings on the outskirts of town.

Across the street from the parking lot, there is a large fenced area in which a country fair takes place on the first Saturday of each month. It was that kind of Saturday, so the fair was there with many local products on display, and quite a few people came for shopping despite the bad weather.

When I reached Liznjan, the village a couple of kilometers from my hometown, I was in the hot & dry zone again.

Dark clouds were near, but still far enough to create an uncanny atmosphere of a lovely summer day with a prospect of the impending doom just around the corner.

These oleander trees in bloom were the last thing I photographed before returning home.

Late last night, a short but intense outburst of stormy weather finally reached my hometown. It was raining heavily for a couple of hours and, after taking a quick shower on the terrace in front of my house while the distant thunders were providing a nice soundtrack, I went to sleep without sweating for a change.

Today is hot again, but the night was very refreshing, so I'm in a better mood than usual.

AND THAT'S IT. HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS SHORT VIGNETTE FROM MY ORDINARY LIFE. AS ALWAYS HERE ON HIVE, THE VIDEO AND THE PHOTOGRAPHS ARE MY WORK - THE END.

Well the rain is almost a constant thing in my part of the world 😭😂

Oh! How I wish I had the spare time to go driving in the rain too. I haven’t gone on my driving expedition to the old city outside Bangkok to explore old and abandoned temples for several years now! Those were the good calm days of wandering around old temple ruins and getting in touch with sacred vibes.

Not the best time for a fair, but a good time for rain-blurred photos :)

I love the oleanders! So pretty.

Oleander trees looking very much pretty. I like the flowers most and especially this weather, looks awesome. I like to walk in rain and this weather is perfect to have fun with family and friends.

When it rains in summer, it is very good weather and one's heart becomes happy. Two days ago it was raining here in Pakistan too and people were enjoying a lot and were very happy.

La lluvia es una bendición de Dios acá en mi país Julio y agosto son los meses donde más llueve.

Las adelfas en flor estás super lindas, primera vez que veo algo así tan hermoso.

Y las construcciones de tu país son bastantes antiguas y hermosas.

That olender tree really caught my attention. The beauty is something to admire of

The clouds are so gray. We do get such kind of rain on summer too.
